JP2 Lectures // Fr. Thierry-Dominique Humbrecht O.P.: Le statut de la métaphysique chez Thomas d’Aquin

On Friday, April 21, 2023, we invite you to the eighth JP2 Lecture, which will be given by fr. Thierry-Dominique Humbrecht O.P. The lecture entitled “Le statut de la métaphysique chez Thomas d’Aquin” (“The status of metaphysics in St. Thomas Aquinas”) will begin at 4:30 p.m. (CET) at Aula 10 at the Angelicum in Rome.

Unsurprisingly, St Thomas’ doctrine and its sources are well-known. However, it seems more difficult, but also more necessary, to situate metaphysics in his work: its status and function. Is it but a simple reappraisal of Aristotle or of the Neoplatonists? Is it but a doctrine about “being”? Above all, is it a science in itself, that is to say, entirely separated from and existing before theology? The question becomes all the more complex, but also fascinating, because of the interweaving of metaphysics with the requirements of Christian theology. It is all about questioning the links between reason and faith, as Veritatis splendor and Fides et ratio invite us to do. Are they distinct, though complementary and harmonious, or are they intertwined and stimulating each other?

Thierry-Dominique Humbrecht: a Dominican friar, holds a doctorate (qualified to direct research) in philosophy and a doctorate in theology. He is a professor at the Faculty of Philosophy of the Institut Catholique de Toulouse, and also teaches at the Institut Saint-Thomas d’Aquin and in other places.
