E-SÉMINAIRE : SOULÈVEMENTS, INSURRECTIONS ET RÉVOLUTIONS (E-SEMINAR: UPRISINGS, INSURRECTIONS AND REVOLUTIONS)

DATE OF THE SEMINAR:  April 17 to June 12, 2023

Course Code: SEM089
Professor: Dr. Maxime Allard O.P.

DESCRIPTION
Uprisings, insurrections and revolutions. Some believed that after the fall of the Berlin Wall, these types of events would have belonged to the past, to a bygone political era, to a completed, accomplished understanding of history. However, in recent years, these types of events have been returning. Some people are happy about it; others deplore it. The terms are resurfacing and circulating again, variously connoted, and used by various social groups, the media, and the political class. Calls, expectations and hopes in this sense abound in certain sectors. Publications and perspectives are multiplying. Often the questions of violence, non-violence, civil disobedience, the “proper” place of passions and emotions in politics are invited into the discussion. Sometimes, also, on this occasion, the so-called “liberal” democracy is questioned. All this takes place in complex relationships with history, with representations (arts, speeches, symbolic gestures…).
This seminar intends to offer and build, patiently, a philosophical sounding board to understand these events and to explore what is at stake regarding politics. It will do so on two axes. The first, more historical, will follow Aristotle’s reflections on the experiences of stasis; the Machiavellian and Hobbesian tumults; the differences between the American and French revolutions (Arendt); communist and anarchist meditations on the revolutions of the 19th century (Marx, Lenin, Bakunin, Kropotkin, etc.) and/or on the insurrections to come (Invisible Committee). The second axis will be built more conceptually from contemporary authors (Georges Didi-Huberman, Antonio Negri, Jacques Rancière, Agamben, and others).

OBJECTIVES
To introduce some philosophical gestures that have taken revolutionary, insurrectionary and uprising phenomena seriously
To think about what is at stake in the understanding of politics and democracy.
To think philosophically about contemporary events by drawing critical inspiration from ancient and modern proposals
Sketch out avenues for answering or rephrasing the following question: “How can we understand the surprise of many people in a liberal democracy when faced with the social and political phenomena that the terms ‘uprising’, ‘insurrection’ and ‘revolution’ designate?
Attempt to specify and articulate the terms “uprising”, “insurrection” and “revolution” and various ways of representing them, of putting them in discourse and in “scene”.

Registration fee:  350,00 €
