SUMMARY:E-SEMINAR: LEARNING TO DWELL
DESCRIPTION:E-SEMINAR: LEARNING TO DWELL\nby Jaco Kruger\nFrom 17th April to 12th June 2023 \nCourse code: SEM84 \nDESCRIPTION\nThe fundamental thesis underlying this seminar is that there exists a kind of fittingness – even stronger\, an affinity – between philosophy and ecology that invites us to think of these two disciplines together and in relation. Philosophy is occupied with the “big questions” of life and existence; its approach is often speculative and generalizing. Philosophy is the ongoing attempt to see the biggest picture\, and to integrate all of experience into such a big picture. In this sense the Greek root word from which the word ecology stems is very appropriate: oikos – the house\, the household\, the dwelling place. Philosophy is about “learning to dwell\,” to use a formulation of Martin Heidegger. What does it mean to be at home in the world? How should humans be at home in the world? And how should we live in our common home? Ecology\, for its part\, has since the middle of the 20th century as a discipline moved closer and closer to the life sciences and the natural sciences. But the fundamental philosophical presuppositions of ecology remain an open question. And the environmental catastrophe that is slowly unfolding in the 21st century affirms the intuition that the worldviews and philosophical presuppositions of the late-capitalist world must urgently be revisited. Making use of resources from process philosophy and from the work of Martin Heidegger\, this seminar contributes to the discussion surrounding the characteristics of an integral ecology (Laudato Sí) by attempting an ecological introduction to philosophy. \nOBJECTIVES\nTo introduce philosophy as the human search for a home in the world\nTo highlight the philosophical roots of the current ecological crisis\nTo contribute to the philosophical foundations of integral ecology as called for in the papal encyclical\, Laudato Sí \nFor more information\, you may open the DOMUNI Universitas main website link:   http://www.domuni.eu \nSeminar Website link: https://www.domuni.eu/en/learning/e-seminar-learning-to-dwell/

SUMMARY:E-SEMINAR : PROCLAIMING HOLY SCRIPTURES
DESCRIPTION:E-SEMINAR : PROCLAIMING HOLY SCRIPTURES\nby David Pereyra\nFrom 17th April to 12th June 2023\nCourse code: SEM72 \nBRINGING A SACRAMENTAL EXPERIENCE TO THE CONGREGATION\nDESCRIPTION\nChristians define the Liturgy of the Word as an act of worship consisting mainly of scriptural readings\, preaching\, and prayers. In this way\, each liturgy nourishes worshippers from the table of God’s word. Christians pursue the sacramental presence of the word of God in Jesus Christ\, present in the sacred scriptures and the Eucharist. The seminar aims to answer the following questions\, What occurs during a liturgical proclamation? What kind of presence do we face during this human action? Proclaiming Holy Scriptures seminar is directed at lay persons and ministers who need to encourage full participation in the worship ministries of their congregations. \nOBJECTIVES\nThe Sacramental act of proclamation\nPerformance and Symbolism in the Proclamation of the Word\nThe Lector: Proper techniques of oral interpretations\nThe Proper Place to Proclaim the Word\nLEARNING OUTCOMES\nKNOWLEDGE\nReaffirming God’s sacramental presence in the proclamation of Holy Scriptures\, in the thought that they are the sacrament of the word of God.\nRecovering the sacramentality of the word of God as a way to relocate it meaningfully within worship actions.\nCOMPETENCE\nAble to explain the sacramentality of the Liturgy of the Word.\nAble to explain the reenactment action of proclaiming Holy Scriptures\nAble to describe new ways to enhance the symbolic value of reading Holy Scriptures during the liturgy\nEVALUATION METHODS\nA contribution of a PowerPoint presentation (or keynote) of approximate 12 slides or a guide of 5 pages 2500 words maximum\, to train lectors for the Liturgy of the Word. \nParticipation in the debate during the second week (quality over quantity) \nFor more information\, you may open the DOMUNI Universitas main website link:   http://www.domuni.eu \nSeminar Website link: https://www.domuni.eu/en/learning/e-seminar-proclaiming-holy-scriptures/

SUMMARY:E-SÉMINAIRE : LA THÉOLOGIE TRINITAIRE (E-SEMINAR: TRINITARIAN THEOLOGY)
DESCRIPTION:E-SÉMINAIRE : LA THÉOLOGIE TRINITAIRE (E-SEMINAR: TRINITARIAN THEOLOGY)\nDu 17 avril au 12 juin 2023 \nCode du cours: SEM030 \nProfesseur : Ma Jacques Fournier\nCourse Code: SEM030 \nTRINITARIAN THEOLOGY IN THE GOSPEL OF JOHN AND THE NEW TESTAMENT\nFaith in the One God runs through the whole Bible (Dt 6\,4-9; 2Sm 7\,22; 1R 8\,60; Is 44\,6-8; 45\,5-6.14\,22; 48\,10-12…). It is of course taken up by Jesus himself (Mk 12:28-34 and parallels) and the authors of the New Testament (Jn 5:44; 17:3; Rom 3:30; 16:27; Gal 3:20; 1Cor 8:4; 1Tm 1:17; 2:3b-6)… \nBut on the mountain of the Transfiguration\, the light of the Son dazzled St. John\, the voice of the Father reassured him and in his Gospel\, he will lead us into the Mystery of this eternal Relationship that was manifested in Jesus\, the Christ\, between the Son of God and his Father… And such is the heart of his discovery\, exposed from the first line of his work: “the Word”\, the Son\, the Word of the Father\, “is God”\, and before all “beginning”\, he is “near God” the Father\, turned “towards” Him\, living in relationship with Him… We will see to what extent our Nicene Constantinopolitan Creed is present in this Gospel of John\, in his Letters but also in the works of St. Luke and St. Paul. \nWith them\, we will also discover the foundations of the Revelation of the Holy Spirit\, also true God\, and we will see\, especially with St. John\, what is his work today towards every man of good will… \nWITH FOLLOW-UP AND VALIDATION\nRegistration fee: 350\,00 € \nFor more information\, you may open the DOMUNI Universitas main website link:   http://www.domuni.eu \nSeminar Website link: https://www.domuni.eu/fr/formations/e-seminaire-la-theologie-trinitaire/ \n  \n

SUMMARY:E-SÉMINAIRE : SOULÈVEMENTS\, INSURRECTIONS ET RÉVOLUTIONS (E-SEMINAR: UPRISINGS\, INSURRECTIONS AND REVOLUTIONS)
DESCRIPTION:E-SÉMINAIRE : SOULÈVEMENTS\, INSURRECTIONS ET RÉVOLUTIONS (E-SEMINAR: UPRISINGS\, INSURRECTIONS AND REVOLUTIONS)\nDATE OF THE SEMINAR:  April 17 to June 12\, 2023 \nCourse Code: SEM089\nProfessor: Dr. Maxime Allard O.P. \nDESCRIPTION\nUprisings\, insurrections and revolutions. Some believed that after the fall of the Berlin Wall\, these types of events would have belonged to the past\, to a bygone political era\, to a completed\, accomplished understanding of history. However\, in recent years\, these types of events have been returning. Some people are happy about it; others deplore it. The terms are resurfacing and circulating again\, variously connoted\, and used by various social groups\, the media\, and the political class. Calls\, expectations and hopes in this sense abound in certain sectors. Publications and perspectives are multiplying. Often the questions of violence\, non-violence\, civil disobedience\, the “proper” place of passions and emotions in politics are invited into the discussion. Sometimes\, also\, on this occasion\, the so-called “liberal” democracy is questioned. All this takes place in complex relationships with history\, with representations (arts\, speeches\, symbolic gestures…).\nThis seminar intends to offer and build\, patiently\, a philosophical sounding board to understand these events and to explore what is at stake regarding politics. It will do so on two axes. The first\, more historical\, will follow Aristotle’s reflections on the experiences of stasis; the Machiavellian and Hobbesian tumults; the differences between the American and French revolutions (Arendt); communist and anarchist meditations on the revolutions of the 19th century (Marx\, Lenin\, Bakunin\, Kropotkin\, etc.) and/or on the insurrections to come (Invisible Committee). The second axis will be built more conceptually from contemporary authors (Georges Didi-Huberman\, Antonio Negri\, Jacques Rancière\, Agamben\, and others). \nOBJECTIVES\nTo introduce some philosophical gestures that have taken revolutionary\, insurrectionary and uprising phenomena seriously\nTo think about what is at stake in the understanding of politics and democracy.\nTo think philosophically about contemporary events by drawing critical inspiration from ancient and modern proposals\nSketch out avenues for answering or rephrasing the following question: “How can we understand the surprise of many people in a liberal democracy when faced with the social and political phenomena that the terms ‘uprising’\, ‘insurrection’ and ‘revolution’ designate?\nAttempt to specify and articulate the terms “uprising”\, “insurrection” and “revolution” and various ways of representing them\, of putting them in discourse and in “scene”. \nRegistration fee:  350\,00 € \nFor more information\, you may open the DOMUNI Universitas main website link: http://www.domuni.eu \nWebsite Seminar Link:  https://www.domuni.eu/fr/formations/e-seminaire-soulevements-insurrections-et-revolutions/

SUMMARY:E-SÉMINAIRE : KANT ET LE PRIMAT DU DEVOIR (E-SEMINAR: KANT AND THE PRIMACY OF DUTY)
DESCRIPTION:E-SÉMINAIRE : KANT ET LE PRIMAT DU DEVOIR (E-SEMINAR: KANT AND THE PRIMACY OF DUTY)\nDATE OF THE SEMINAR:  April 17 to June 12\, 2023 \nCourse Code: SEM87\nProfessor: Dr Matthieu Dubost \nPRESENTATION OF THE SEMINAR:\nThe approach proposed here will be articulated in four steps. If Kantian thought has often been criticized\, it has often been done superficially and mainly by opposing it to the needs of subjectivity and the sensitive disappointments to which such a morality gave rise. Without neglecting these remarks\, it is undoubtedly important first to note what in his doctrine can be accepted as necessary elements for any valid ethics. This reading will then have to distinguish the weak criticisms from those to which the Kantian edifice resists badly\, and above all to note in Kant himself the tensions and weaknesses caused by the primacy of duty. This will give rise to a negative or critical demonstration of the insufficiency of Kantian duty as an exclusive basis for ethics. This will be our second step. \nOur interest in more contemporary critiques will essentially lie in their more unitary conception of the person\, a difficulty on which E. Kant stumbled. By aiming at a more dualistic anthropology\, we will continue the critique started in the second stage while giving ourselves the means to go towards another morality. \nIt is then\, in a fourth and final step\, that we will take into account an “ethics of the conatus”\, that of Ricoeur. We will discuss his ability to positively demonstrate the validity of an ethics of desire\, or teleological ethics\, which does not\, however\, claim to be an anthropology of desire. It will be necessary to discern what in him is a valid and argued answer to Kantian difficulties\, from what is perhaps more properly a pre-philosophical choice with the weaknesses that this implies. This reading will also have to take into account the way in which one can situate duty within an ethics where it is not primary. \nTHE STAGES OF THE SEMINAR:\nStage 1: Kant – Foundations of the Metaphysics of Morals\nStage 2: Kant – “Dialectic of Pure Practical Reason”\, Critique of Practical Reason\nStage 3: Hegel and Schiller\nStep 4: Ricoeur \nRegistration fee:  350\,00 € \nFor more information\, you may open the DOMUNI Universitas main website link: http://www.domuni.eu \nWebsite Seminar Link:  https://www.domuni.eu/fr/formations/diplomes/kant-et-le-primat-du-devoir/

SUMMARY:Gerbert of Aurillac: Pope and Scientist
DESCRIPTION:Angelicum Thomistic Institute – Science & Religion Online Series “The Forgotten History of Science and Faith”\nGerbert of Aurillac: Pope and Scientist\nConstantino Sigismondi\nContract Professor in Rome Universities: Sapienza\, Unicampus and APRA\, Professor of Physics in Alessandro Volta Institute of Rome.\n12 April 2023\n7:00 PM (Rome) / 6:00 PM (London) / 1:00 PM (New York)\nLanguage: English \nA passionating history\, which has be seen as the ideal self-made man\, or the genius prevailing against all odds.\nReliably Gerbert was noble and cadet\, monk and mathematical genius\, so he could move from Aurillac to Catalunya around 969\, were he met the mozarabic science world and developed some original algorithms either in mathematics and in music\, as in the treatises on the Abacus and on the Orgue’s tubes lengths\, written in Reims where he was called as scholarch since 972 by Archbishop Adalbero. In 991 he become Archbishop of Reims after the discussed deposition of Arnulf. Pope John XV did not accept such deposition and Gerbert went to the court of the young Emperor Otto III to be his teacher. He encouraged the election of Bruno of Carinthia\, Gregory V\, cousin of Otto III\, to strengthen the relationship between Church and Empire. Gregory moved the exiliated archbishop Gerbert from Reims to Ravenna\, and his sudden death in 999 determined the election of Gerbert to the Roman Pontificate. Never before such a prominent scholarly figure\, renowned in all Europe for his science\, become Pope (999-1003). During his papacy the young Emperor died in January 1002 and the political situation in Rome remained in strong tension\, but respected the wise Pope. \nThe historiography on Gerbert assumed some mithological elements due to the uncommon genius\, until 1640\, after Baronius\, when the Polish Dominican Bzovsky wrote a first biography based on his works and letters. In XIX century his mathematical works were reviewed by Bubnov and in XX century his music works come out thanks to Sachs. The astronomy of Gerbert was known and studied as well\, and his Epistolarium edited in several languages (Pratt Lattin in English\, Pierre Riché in French\, Panvini Carciotto in Italian). Flavio Nuvolone in Switzerland promoted the studies on Gerbert of Aurillac since 1983 to his death 2019: they are in the books in Italian “The Number and The Cross” (2012) and “From Gerbert to Sylvester II” (2013)\, were he was able to decodificate the underlying text in the Carme Figuratum\, about the first introduction in Europe of Hindu-Arabic numbers\, by Gerbert. \nJoin us\, as we rediscover the forgotten history of Science and Faith. \nClick Here to Register\nPUST-Angelicum Thomistic Institute website link

SUMMARY:Arise\, Let Us Be On Our Way: The Eucharist and Evangelization
DESCRIPTION:Arise\, Let Us Be On Our Way: The Eucharist and Evangelization\nUniversity of Dallas \nThe Thomistic Institute at the University of Dallas presents a lecture by Fr. Innocent Smith\, O.P. of St. Mary’s Seminary and University titled “Arise\, Let Us Be On Our Way: The Eucharist and Evangelization.” \nTuesday\, April 4 \n6:00 PM \nGorman A \nThis lecture is free and open to the public. \nAbout the Speaker: \nFr. Innocent Smith\, O.P. is Assistant Professor of Homiletics at St. Mary’s Seminary and University. His research interests are at the intersection of liturgy and theology\, including sacramental theology\, homiletics\, liturgical manuscripts\, ecclesiology\, and sacred music. He is a Roman Catholic priest and a member of Province of St. Joseph of the Order of Preachers. He is presently assigned to the Dominican community of Sts. Philip and James in Baltimore\, MD. \nSmith’s forthcoming monograph\, “Bible Missals and the Dominican Liturgy\,” focuses on medieval bibles which contain liturgical texts for the celebration of the Mass. The liturgical selections contained in bible missals give precious insight into both the development of the celebration of the liturgy as well as the processes of customization and design of medieval bibles. Bible missals present a fascinating example of the interpenetration of memory and enactment\, enabling the celebration of the mysteries articulated in the biblical text. \nThomistic Institute lecture link

SUMMARY:Course by Visiting Professor: Rémi Brague
DESCRIPTION:JP2 STUDIES COURSE\nCourse by Visiting Professor: Rémi Brague\nThis week\, we welcome Rémi Brague\, renowned philosopher and Ratzinger Prize laureate\, as Visitng Professor at the Angelicum. Professor Brague will teach an intensive course titled “Europe’s Philosophical Identity” as part of the 2nd Cycle in Philosophy and of the JP2 Studies program run by the St. John Paul II Institute of Culture. The course will begin on March 23 and continue until March 31. Angelicum students are invited to audit the lectures.  \nCourse description:\nEurope is clumsily groping for her political identity. Her far older cultural identity looks easier to assess. Yet\, the question of what European culture might be deserves asking. I suggest to look for the sources (not “roots”) of said identity in the basic experiences of the world which are summarized in the names “Athens” and “Jerusalem”\, and in the way both were mediated by the Roman experience. Europe’s cultural identity proves to be eccentric: the points of reference are neither inside of the European space nor already given. They have to be acquired by learning. Hence an uninterrupted series of “Renaissances”. \nREAD MORE \nIf you wish to participate in the course please contact: jp2studies@pust.it \nCheck here for other courses offered in the current semester at the St. John Paul II Institute of Culture

SUMMARY:The Forgotten History of Science and Faith: Origins of the Myth of the Warfare of Religion with Science
DESCRIPTION:Angelicum Thomistic Institute – Science & Religion Online Series\nThe Forgotten History of Science and Faith: Origins of the Myth of the Warfare of Religion with Science\nLawerence Principe\nJohn Hopkins University\n22 March 2023\n4:30 PM (Rome) / 3:30 PM (London) / 11:30 AM (New York)\nOnline and In-Person at the Angelicum (Aula Minor)!\nLanguage: English \nAlthough repudiated today by all serious historians of science\, the concept of an eternal and inescapable conflict between science and religion remains strong among the general public as well as among a large number of scientists. This talk will begin by examining the historical origins of the concept\, showing how it emerged from a constellation of political\, social\, and\npeculiar personal circumstances of the late 19 th century. It will then explore the resilience of the concept and how\, why\, and by whom it has been perpetuated down to the present day\, and suggests some means by which it could be more effectively countered. \nAbout the Speaker: Lawrence M. Principe is the Drew Professor of Humanities at Johns Hopkins University in the Departments of History of Science and Technology and of Chemistry. He holds a Ph.D in Organic Chemistry from Indiana University\, Bloomington\, and a Ph.D. in History of Science from Johns Hopkins. His research focusses on late Medieval and early modern alchemy/chemistry and the interactions of science and religion. His recent books include The Scientific Revolution: A Very Short Introduction (Oxford\, 2011)\, The Secrets of Alchemy (Chicago\, 2013)\, and The Transmutations of Chymistry: Wilhelm Homberg and the Académie Royale des Sciences (Chicago\, 2020). He also produced the 12-lecture course “Science and Religion” for The Teaching Company. He is the recipient of the Francis Bacon Medal (2005)\, the Franklin-Lavoisier Prize (2016)\, the American Chemical Society’s HIST Award (2020) and the St. Albert the Great Award from the Society of Catholic Scientists (2020) for his scholarly contributions. \nClick Here to Register\nPUST-Angelicum Thomistic Institute website link

SUMMARY:Thomism and Analytic Philosophy: The Promises and Perils of Dialogue
DESCRIPTION:Thomism and Analytic Philosophy: The Promises and Perils of Dialogue\n\nMarch 14 at 2:30 pm – March 15 at 5:30 pm –  Angelicum\, Aula Minor\n\nLargo Angelicum\, 1 Rome\, Italy 00184\nLanguage: English\nTheme of the Conference:\nDialogue across philosophical traditions\, like dialogue across disciplinary fields\, is a dangerous enterprise. It comes with the danger of misunderstanding and the danger of being misunderstood\, the danger of creating difficulties where no difficulties exist\, and the danger of dismissing difficulties that will not go away even if we ignore them. In the contemporary philosophical academy\, moreover\, these dangers are only aggravated by widespread institutional pressures for philosophers to specialize their research. The more we dedicate ourselves to a single topic\, within a single field of a single philosophical tradition\, the less likely we are to engage with scholars who work on other topics in other fields—lets alone other philosophical traditions. \nAt the same time\, dialogue also seems to be uniquely characteristic of philosophy. This is true not just because some of the greatest philosophical works were written in dialogue form\, or because philosophy\, historically\, seems to have sprung out of a dialogical context\, but more importantly because philosophers seem to be uniquely well suited for dialogue: we dialogue with physicists and film-makers\, mathematicians and musicians\, historians\, politicians\, theologians\, and a great many others. It would be strange\, indeed\, if philosophers can dialogue widely beyond the bounds of their own discipline\, but cannot dialogue widely within the bounds of their own discipline. \nThe purpose of this conference\, then\, is to explore the possibility of dialogue between two rich philosophical traditions\, namely\, Thomism and analytic philosophy. We will neither shy away from the dangers that come with attempting such a dialogue\, nor will we turn a blind eye to the benefits that such dialogue may bring. Moreover\, we will be even-handed in our representation of the two traditions. By discussing both the perils and the promises of dialogue from both the Thomistic and the analytic perspectives\, we hope that this conference will serve as an example and an impetus for future collaboration between philosophers in these two traditions. \nSpeakers for the Conference:\nGaven Kerr (St. Patrick’s Pontifical University\, Maynooth)\nPhilip-Neri Reese\, O.P. (Pontifical University of Saint Thomas)\nMack Sullivan (University of Notre Dame) \nClick HERE to register for the conference! \nFollow this event live streamed on our YouTube and Facebook pages. \nFor more information\, you may open the PUST-Angelicum Thomistic Institute website link

SUMMARY:Beauty and Religiosity in Science
DESCRIPTION:  \nBeauty and Religiosity in Science\n9 March 2023\nAula Minor\, Angelicum\nLanguage: English\nBeauty and Science\nWhat role does beauty play in science? To address this question\, this lecture draws on data from the world’s first empirical study of the role of beauty in science\, conducted in the UK\, US\, Italy\, and India. After analyzing surveys of more than 3000 physicists and biologists and in-depth interviews with more than 200 of them\, we identify ways in which scientists’ aesthetic experiences shape the practice of science and the well-being of scientists. The presentation will also assess the relationship between scientists’ aesthetic experiences and their religious/spiritual commitments. \nAbout the Speaker: Dr. Brandon Vaidyanathan is an Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Sociology at The Catholic University of America. He holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Business Administration from St. Francis Xavier University in Nova Scotia and HEC Montreal respectively\, and a Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Notre Dame. \nDr. Vaidyanathan’s research examines the cultural dimensions of religious\, commercial\, medical\, and scientific institutions\, and has been published in journals such as Business and Society\, Journal of the American Academy of Religion\, Social Forces\, Social Problems\, Sociology of Religion\, Journal for the Scientific Study of Religion\, Journal for the Theory of Social Behavior\, and Work\, Employment\, and Society. His research has been funded by grants from the John Templeton Foundation\, Templeton Religion Trust\, and the Lilly Endowment. \nThis lecture is made possible by a grant from the Templeton Religion Trust (#TRT0296\, PI: Brandon Vaidyanathan). \nClick Here to Register \nFor more information\, you may open the PUST-Angelicum Thomistic Institute website
