Franciszek Longchamps de Bérier: “Hominum causa: ‘All Law is Established for Men’s Sake’ and the Dispute on the Essence of Man”\nOn Thursday\, May 18\, 2023\, we invite you to the JP2 Lecture\, which will be given by Rev. Franciszek Longchamps de Bérier\, Professor of Law at the Jagiellonian University in Kraków. The lecture entitled “Hominum causa: ‘All Law is Established for Men’s Sake’ and the Dispute on the Essence of Man” will begin at 4:30 p.m. (CET) in Aula 11 at the Angelicum. \nLawyers are specially trained in providing legal services. They are necessarily aware that the regulations that the law has recourse to are in fact only tools\, and that the law is actually designed to promote certain values and it is these values which find their expression in the law. It was pointedly noted in 1991 that\, “as history demonstrates\, a democracy without values easily turns into open or thinly-disguised totalitarianism”. The experience of the enormous change in political systems which took place in late twentieth-century Europe led the author of this observation to further comment: “Authentic democracy is possible only in a state ruled by law\, and on the basis of a correct conception of the human person”. The first part of this last citation is best known and often repeated. It is the second\, however\, that touches the main problem of our times\, i.e. anthropology. DESCRIPTION:Centenaires de la Canonisation\, de la Mort et de la Naissance de Saint Thomas d’Aquin\n9 mai 2023-12 mai 2023\nToulouse\, France\nLangue: Français \nLes années 2023\, anniversaire de sa canonisation (18 juillet 1323)\, 2024\, de sa mort\, et 2025\, année de sa naissance (1225) seront la triple occasion de revenir sur Thomas d’Aquin (1225 1274)\, cette figure centrale de la chrétienté médiévale au XIII siècle. Celui qui est devenu le « docteur commun de l’Église » et le principal théologien de l’Ordre dominicain fait l’objet depuis le XIV siècle d’un culte toulousain puisque le pape Urbain V a laissé à la « ville rose »\, aux Jacobins\, ses reliques (1368). \nTrois volets caractérisent cette triple célébration : spirituelle et liturgique\, artistique et musicale\, intellectuelle et culturelle. C’est pourquoi avec le soutien de la ville de Toulouse\, les Jacobins\, la province dominicaine de Toulouse\, le couvent provincial saint Thomas d’Aquin et son studium\, la Revue thomiste et l’Institut saint Thomas d’Aquin\, l’Institut Catholique de Toulouse organiseront les manifestations indiquées dans ce programme. DESCRIPTION:Angelicum Thomistic Institute – Science & Religion Online Series “The Forgotten History of Science and Faith”\nStepping with Science to Sainthood: Nicolaus Steno’s Conversion and His Unity of Life\nNuno Castel-Branco\nThe Harvard University Center for Italian Renaissance Studies\n4 May 2023\n7:00 PM (Rome) / 6:00 PM (London) / 1:00 PM (New York)\nLanguage: English \nIn 1667\, at the peak of his scientific career\, the Danish anatomist Nicolaus Steno (1638-1686)\nconverted to Catholicism. Since then\, much has been written about it. His Protestant friends and\nmodern historians alike found this conversion perplexing. On the other hand\, his Florentine\nfriends and Catholic apologetics rejoiced and used Steno’s conversion as an argumentative tool.\nYet\, most accounts fail to contextualize Steno’s conversion in light of his research interests in\nanatomy and\, later on\, in geology. Did Steno convert only to please the Medici family\, his new\npatrons? Did he experience a religious experience that suddenly made him want to convert? Or\ndoes his conversion\, instead\, follow gradually from his pursuit of truth in science? In this lecture\,\nI explain that Steno’s conversion happened due to a particular moment in his scientific career in\nwhich he was obsessed with finding rigorous scientific knowledge about the world. Thierry-Dominique Humbrecht O.P. The lecture entitled “Le statut de la métaphysique chez Thomas d’Aquin” (“The status of metaphysics in St. Thomas Aquinas”) will begin at 4:30 p.m. (CET) at Aula 10 at the Angelicum in Rome. \nUnsurprisingly\, St Thomas’ doctrine and its sources are well-known. However\, it seems more difficult\, but also more necessary\, to situate metaphysics in his work: its status and function. Is it but a simple reappraisal of Aristotle or of the Neoplatonists? Is it but a doctrine about “being”? Above all\, is it a science in itself\, that is to say\, entirely separated from and existing before theology? The question becomes all the more complex\, but also fascinating\, because of the interweaving of metaphysics with the requirements of Christian theology. The Conference also aims to analyze the inherent connection between justice which has ius as its object—what might be called a juridical aspect of iustitia—and broader issues of the salvific and moral aspects of justice. \nTo complete this analysis\, it is necessary to inquire into Aquinas’s historical and doctrinal sources\, the relevant texts in which he elaborates his account of ius\, justice\, and lex\, as well as the reception of his juridical thought down the centuries until the present day. To this end\, the Conference will also reflect on contemporary assessments of the tension between the objective and subjective meanings of ius both in Aquinas’s thought and in the Thomistic tradition. In addition\, the Thomistic foundations of the notion of ius and of the virtue of justice will be explored\, together with research into the interconnectedness between justice\, the concept of good\, and practical reasonableness. \nThe Conference aims to show how the analysis of the Thomistic concept of ius\, rather than being only of historical interest\, may prove to be fruitful for present-day issues in legal theory\, as well as for a dialogue with contemporary legal-philosophical conceptions of the juridical phenomenon\, law\, and rights. DESCRIPTION:E-SEMINAR: LEARNING TO DWELL\nby Jaco Kruger\nFrom 17th April to 12th June 2023 \nCourse code: SEM84 \nDESCRIPTION\nThe fundamental thesis underlying this seminar is that there exists a kind of fittingness – even stronger\, an affinity – between philosophy and ecology that invites us to think of these two disciplines together and in relation. Philosophy is occupied with the “big questions” of life and existence; its approach is often speculative and generalizing. Philosophy is the ongoing attempt to see the biggest picture\, and to integrate all of experience into such a big picture. In this sense the Greek root word from which the word ecology stems is very appropriate: oikos – the house\, the household\, the dwelling place. Philosophy is about “learning to dwell\,” to use a formulation of Martin Heidegger. What does it mean to be at home in the world? How should humans be at home in the world? And how should we live in our common home? Ecology\, for its part\, has since the middle of the 20th century as a discipline moved closer and closer to the life sciences and the natural sciences. But the fundamental philosophical presuppositions of ecology remain an open question. And the environmental catastrophe that is slowly unfolding in the 21st century affirms the intuition that the worldviews and philosophical presuppositions of the late-capitalist world must urgently be revisited. Some believed that after the fall of the Berlin Wall\, these types of events would have belonged to the past\, to a bygone political era\, to a completed\, accomplished understanding of history. However\, in recent years\, these types of events have been returning. Some people are happy about it; others deplore it. The terms are resurfacing and circulating again\, variously connoted\, and used by various social groups\, the media\, and the political class. Calls\, expectations and hopes in this sense abound in certain sectors. Publications and perspectives are multiplying. Often the questions of violence\, non-violence\, civil disobedience\, the “proper” place of passions and emotions in politics are invited into the discussion. Sometimes\, also\, on this occasion\, the so-called “liberal” democracy is questioned. All this takes place in complex relationships with history\, with representations (arts\, speeches\, symbolic gestures…).\nThis seminar intends to offer and build\, patiently\, a philosophical sounding board to understand these events and to explore what is at stake regarding politics. It will do so on two axes. The first\, more historical\, will follow Aristotle’s reflections on the experiences of stasis; the Machiavellian and Hobbesian tumults; the differences between the American and French revolutions (Arendt); communist and anarchist meditations on the revolutions of the 19th century (Marx\, Lenin\, Bakunin\, Kropotkin\, etc.) and/or on the insurrections to come (Invisible Committee). If Kantian thought has often been criticized\, it has often been done superficially and mainly by opposing it to the needs of subjectivity and the sensitive disappointments to which such a morality gave rise. Without neglecting these remarks\, it is undoubtedly important first to note what in his doctrine can be accepted as necessary elements for any valid ethics. This reading will then have to distinguish the weak criticisms from those to which the Kantian edifice resists badly\, and above all to note in Kant himself the tensions and weaknesses caused by the primacy of duty. This will give rise to a negative or critical demonstration of the insufficiency of Kantian duty as an exclusive basis for ethics. This will be our second step. \nOur interest in more contemporary critiques will essentially lie in their more unitary conception of the person\, a difficulty on which E. Kant stumbled. By aiming at a more dualistic anthropology\, we will continue the critique started in the second stage while giving ourselves the means to go towards another morality. \nIt is then\, in a fourth and final step\, that we will take into account an “ethics of the conatus”\, that of Ricoeur. We will discuss his ability to positively demonstrate the validity of an ethics of desire\, or teleological ethics\, which does not\, however\, claim to be an anthropology of desire. It will be necessary to discern what in him is a valid and argued answer to Kantian difficulties\, from what is perhaps more properly a pre-philosophical choice with the weaknesses that this implies. The theory of organizations is an object of study for disciplines as varied as economics\, sociology\, psychology\, history\, management sciences\, etc. In this course\, we will study the major currents that have influenced the evolution and practices of the management of organizations. In addition to a historical approach to the theory of organizations\, we will analyze the major themes such as the difficulties faced by the organization today. The motivation of human resources\, the work environment\, and the organization\, the methods of decision-making in the organization\, etc. A global understanding of the organization is an asset that will give access to a broad knowledge of the reality of organizational management.
