SUMMARY:Aquino om Gud som alltings yttersta orsak (Aquinas on God as the ultimate cause of everything)
DESCRIPTION:Angelicum Thomistic Institute – Vad är Gud?\nAquino om Gud som alltings yttersta orsak (Aquinas on God as the Ultimate Cause of Everything)\nUlf Jonsson\, S.J.\nNord University\, Norway\n28 April 2022\n19:00 Rom/Stockholm\nLanguage: Swedish \nSedan upplysningstiden har idén att Gud är orsak till händelser i världen framstått som intellektuellt omöjlig. \nBecause of the Enlightenment understanding of causality and of its accompanying deistic worldview\, the idea of God being the cause of events in the world has long been regarded as intellectually impossible. In our time a new understanding of causality\, largely inspired by Aristotle and Aquinas\, makes it easier to think of God both as the ultimate cause of everything and also as intervening in the events of the world. \nProfessor Ulf Jonsson\, SJ föddes i Sverige 1960. \nProfessor Ulf Jonsson\, SJ was born in Sweden in 1960. After studying Latin and Greek at Uppsala University\, he entered the Novitiate of the Jesuits in Germany in 1984. His PhD dissertation at Uppsala University in 1999 was on Bernard Lonergan’s proof of God’s existence. He is Assistant Professor of Philosophy of Religion at Uppsala University since 2010\, and Professor of Philosophy of Religion at the Newman Institute in Uppsala since 2012.

SUMMARY:Vatican II and Non-Christian Religions: Mission as a Context for Dialogue?
DESCRIPTION:Angelicum Thomistic Institute – Online Professors Series\nVatican II and Non-Christian Religions: Mission as a Context for Dialogue?\nProf. Gavin D’Costa\nAngelicum Thomistic Institute\n\n27 April 2022\n7pm CET / 6pm GMT / 1pm EST\nLanguage: English \nThe teachings of the Council on other religions has often been hailed as the move from mission to dialogue. This lecture suggests otherwise. The Council did show a positive appreciation of non-Christian religions\, but within the context of both mission and dialogue. This gives us a more balanced picture of the tasks ahead. \nGavin D’Costa is Professor of Catholic Theology at the University of Bristol. Gavin studied at the Universities of Birmingham (under Professor John Hick) and completed his doctorate at Cambridge University. Gavin is author of nine books\, one co-authored book\, and has edited twelve books. His interests are in theology of religions\, and more recently the Catholic theology of Jews and Muslims. His work has been translated into seven languages. His two most recent publications are: Vatican II. Catholic Doctrines on Jews and Muslims\, (Oxford University Press\, 2014) and Catholic Doctrines on the Jewish People after Vatican II (OUP\, 2019). Gavin has also published a book of poetry (Making Nothing Happen) with a group of Christian poets. Gavin is an advisor to the Roman Catholic Bishops in England and Wales on matters related to other religions. He has taught in Rome at the Gregorian\, as Visiting McCarthy Professor. Gavin is married with two children. \nThis is an online lecture. You can live-stream it on YouTube without registering\, but if you register\, we will send you a Zoom link via email and you will have an opportunity to submit questions to the speaker after the talk. \nClick here to register.\nClick here to learn more about the Angelicum Professors Online Series.\nhttps://angelicum.it/thomistic-institute/event/vatican-ii-and-non-christian-religions-mission-as-a-context-for-dialogue/?lang=en \n

DESCRIPTION:Religion et religiosité à la loupe de la technologie moderne (Religion and Religiosity under the Scrutiny of Modern Technology) \nby: Prof. Dr. Ricardo LUFRANI (Université Anglicom en Italie) \nApril 9\, 2022 \nACADEMIE DE BAGDAD POUR LES SCIENCES HUMAINE \nPourquoi une académie des sciences humaines ? \nACADEMIE DE BAGDAD Fr \nBAGHDAD ACADEMY FOR HUMAN SCIENCES \nConference on Christianity and Technology \n

SUMMARY:Next Steps in the Jewish-Catholic Dialogue
DESCRIPTION:Next Steps in the Jewish-Catholic Dialogue\n4 April 2022 – 17:00\nLocation: Angelicum – Aula Minor\, and live-streamed\nLanguage: English and Italian\n\n\nPlease join us for “Next Steps in the Jewish-Catholic Dialogue\,” a pair of lectures co-sponsored by the Angelicum Thomistic Institute and the Cardinal Bea Center for Judaic Studies (Gregorian). In the last half century\, the dialogue between Jews and Catholics has advanced in many unpredictable ways\, but has still left many open questions to explore. \nThe event is divided into two evenings. The first conference on Monday\, April 4 at the Angelicum will present a Catholic rereading of the latest document drawn up in the rabbinical field on the relationship between Jews and Christians followed by a Jewish response. A kosher reception will follow in the Sala delle Collone. Please register here to attend in person or via livestream. Registration is recommended\, but not required. \nThe second evening\, Tuesday\, April 5 at the Gregorian\, will focus on a dialogue about the Land Promise\, a theme rarely touched upon due to its sensitive political and historical nature and equally essential both for its central importance for the People of Israel and for the Hebrew Bible. To attend this lecture in person\, you must register by 12:00 Monday\, April 4 at unigr.it. Registration is mandatory for in person attendance.\n \n\n\nAll lectures will be available in both English and Italian via simultaneous translation both in person and online. \nProgramme for April 4 at the Angelicum:\nFrom Jerusalem to Rome: Catholic Reflections on a Document by Orthodox Jewish Rabbis – H.E. Bruno Forte\, Metropolitan Archbishop of Chieti-Vasto \nResponse – Prof. Karma Ben-Johanan\, Humboldt University\, Berlin \nReception to follow. \nClick here to register for Day 1 (April 4) at the Angelicum.\nClick here to register for Day 2 (April 5) at the Gregorian (mandatory registration by 12:00\, April 4) \nPlease ensure that you register for each lecture individually. SUMMARY:The Origin of Life and Nature Before Sin: Scientific and Theological Perspectives
DESCRIPTION:The Origin of Life and Nature Before Sin: Scientific and Theological Perspectives\n1-2 April 2022\nLocation: Angelicum – Aula Minor\nMain presentations will be livestreamed\nLanguage: English \nOne of the most fundamental and\, paradoxically\, least understood problems in biology is the origin of life. All possible scenarios – ranging from life emerging as a result of a supernatural event; life being coeternal with matter; life having an extraterrestrial origin; life arising spontaneously and readily from nonliving matter in short periods of time; to life being an outcome of an evolutionary process extended in time and of increasing complexity – raise intriguing philosophical and theological questions. \nAnother crucial step in the history of the universe was the origin of the human species. Here\, the continuously challenged and revisited\, yet commonly accepted scenario developed by evolutionary anthropogenesis faces the Biblical account of creation and the Christian understanding of human nature. \nFurther\, if we accept the evolutionary scenario of the origin of species\, a challenging question arises about natural disasters\, suffering\, struggle for existence\, and animal death before the emergence of humans and their sin. Related to this is the condition of human nature before the fall. Were Adam and Eve truly immortal and free from any pain and suffering in the world in which natural and physical evil were already present? \nTrying to answer these and other questions concerning the origins\, we bring into conversation distinguished specialists working in natural science as well as philosophical and systematic theology from Europe and North America. Our aim is to offer a meaningful contribution to the ongoing dialogue between science and religion\, from the point of view of classical theology and the thought of Saint Thomas Aquinas. \nSchedule\nFriday\, 1 April\n9:00 | On the Origin of Life: A Scientific Perspective\nChristopher Shingledecker \n10:30 | Causes and the Origin of Life: Philosophy of Nature\, Metaphysics\, and Theology\nWilliam Carroll \n12:00 | Apes\, Hominins\, and the Scientific Evidence for Human Origins\nKiernan McNulty \n14:30 | The Origin of the Human Species: Philosophical and Theological Perspectives\nMariusz Tabaczek\, O.P. \n16:00 | Breakout Sessions (not livestreamed) \nSaturday\, 2 April\n9:00 | Can Nature be ‘Red in Tooth and Claw’ in the Thought of Augustine?\nStanley Rosenberg \n10:30 | Fallen Angel Theodicies: A Philosophical Assessment\nKent Dunnington \n12:00 | The Faith of Adam in Paradise. SUMMARY:¿Es Dios un ser atemporal?

SUMMARY:Thomas av Aquino om varats metafysik
DESCRIPTION:Angelicum Thomistic Institute – Vad är Gud?\nThomas av Aquino om varats metafysik (Aquinas & the Metaphysics of Being)\nDr. \nOne of the more famous teachings in Thomas Aquinas’ metaphysics is that on the real difference between being and essence. The essence of a thing is\, briefly\, that which decides what kind of thing something is. The being of something\, on the other hand\, is an act\, namely the act to be. This composition not only goes for material things in the physical world around us but also for immaterial finite substances; it could have been the case that they would not have been. Only in God we do not find this composition. God is pure act\, a pure act of being. God does not have an essence over and above His being\, then\, or – put in a different way – God’s essence is being. From this vantage point\, one can understand the superiority of being over essence and also Thomas’ teaching on the analogy of being: the being of finite things is being in an analogous sense to the being that God has\, or rather is – He Who is being itself. \nErik Åkerlund holds a PhD in theoretical philosophy with an emphasis on the history of philosophy from Uppsala University\, 2011. Since 2013 he has held a position as lecturer in philosophy at The Newman Institute\, a Jesuit run university college in Uppsala\, Sweden. Since 2018\, he has also held the position of Director of Studies at The Newman Institute. Within history of philosophy\, Dr. Åkerlund is primarily interested in Scholastic and Early Modern philosophy. Thematically\, his interests primarily lie within the areas of metaphysics and epistemology.

SUMMARY:The Doctrine of Creation & Theories of Evolution
DESCRIPTION:Angelicum Thomistic Institute – Science & Religion Online Series\nThe Doctrine of Creation & Theories of Evolution\nKenneth Kemp\nUniversity of St. Thomas\n15 March 2022\n7pm (Rome) / 6pm (London) / 2pm (New York)\nLanguage: English \nAccording to a popular view of evolution and creation\, the two ideas are alternative\, indeed contradictory\, answers to the question of origins. In fact\, there is no contradiction between the two\, as careful attention to each idea shows. In this talk\, Dr. Kemp clarifies the idea of creation\, specifying its doctrinal content and the leading alternatives to it. Then\, he clarifies the idea of evolution\, both by exposition of its logical structure and by contrasting it with other kinds of scientific theory. These clarifications show that the proper relation between creation and evolution is not contradiction\, but complementarity. \nKenneth W. Kemp is emeritus professor of philosophy at the University of St. Thomas\, St. Paul\, Minnesota\, USA. His academic degrees include an M.A. in the history & philosophy of science and a Ph.D. in philosophy\, both from the University of Notre Dame. His previous work includes articles on monogenesis\, naturalism\, miracles\, and faith\, as well as a book entitled The War That Never Was. He is currently working on a book on the history of the Catholic evolutionism. \nThis is an online lecture. You can live-stream it on YouTube without registering\, but if you register\, we will send you a Zoom link via email and you will have an opportunity to submit questions to the speaker after the talk. \nClick here to register.

SUMMARY:Angelicum Thomistic Institute – Online Professors Series
DESCRIPTION:What is Truth? Aquinas’s Teaching on Lying\nSr. Catherine Joseph Droste\, OP\nPontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas\n  \nLanguage: English \nWhat is the essence of a lie? This question has been debated for centuries and with good reason. The secularization of society pushes the debate forward as Christians face new moral dilemmas regarding communication and truth. While some reject Thomas Aquinas’s teaching on lying as too rigid\, Sr. Catherine Joseph Droste\, OP will argue that he\, in fact\, offers sound\, coherent\, universal principles accessible to all. \nThis is an online lecture. You can live-stream it on YouTube without registering\, but if you register\, we will send you a Zoom link via email and you will have an opportunity to submit questions to the speaker after the talk. \nClick here to register.\n
