SUMMARY:AQUINAS FOR ASIA
DESCRIPTION:Date: Thursday\, 19 January 2023\nLocation: Angelicum Aula 11\nTime: 12:45 pm – 7 pm \nSpeakers include:\nFr. Martin Ganeri\, OP: “Thomas Aquinas and Hindu Thought”\nFr. Michael Sherwin\, OP: “Thomas Aquinas on Christ as the True Way to Heaven”\nBernadette Cheng: “Thomas Aquinas & Chinese Ethics: The Comparison of the Virtue of Charity & the Three Confucian Immortals”\nFr. Will Conquer\, MEP:  “Buddhism and Catholicism: Opportunities for Convergence”\nProf. Soon Hock Lim:  “Creative Co-Existence in a Religious Pluralistic Society”\nKarl Liu:  “Thomas Aquinas and Chinese Thought” \nThe Catholic Church speaks about Aquinas as a common doctor of theological and philosophical research. But what could that mean today in the context of the Church’s life in Asia with its diverse cultures and religious as well as secular philosophical traditions? What does it mean to speak realistically about Aquinas for Asia? \nThis day-long conference at the Angelicum will explore Aquinas’s thought in conversation with classical Hindu traditions\, principles of Buddhist doctrine\, and elements from classical and contemporary Chinese and Southeast Asian political thought. The aim is to explore seeds of thinking for the evangelization and profound Catholic engagement of contemporary Asian cultures. \nRegistration: https://forms.gle/sdHE2NedGdU3iLmJ9\nLunch included for those who register. \nFor more information\, you may open the PUST website link: https://angelicum.it/event/aquinas-for-asia-2023/?fbclid=IwAR0k4dvez6SM8KTIHZWa_DfTrjILZ95qvd4KqKgvesvVPaErSq5TZlCoTSQ

SUMMARY:The Religion of Technology: Transhumanism and the Myth of Progress
DESCRIPTION:Angelicum Thomistic Institute – Science & Religion Online Series\nThe Religion of Technology: Transhumanism and the Myth of Progress\nMichael Burdett\nUniversity of Nottingham\nIan Ramsey Centre for Science and Religion\, University of Oxford\n14 December 2022\n7:00  PM (Rome) / 6:00 PM (London) / 1:00 PM (New York)\nLanguage: English \nIn this presentation I chart a succinct intellectual history of the myth of progress and how it has been embedded\, and is still embedded\, in the claims of science and technology. Furthermore\, I aim to show how transhumanism depends upon and extends this rampant and robust myth and that its enthusiasts subsequently derive religious value from it. First\, I begin with the claims of this myth of progress and try to arrive at some characterizing features of it. Next I turn to the origins of this myth of progress and how it became entwined with the claims of technoscience leading to its prominence in the 19th century. I then turn to the first part of the 20th century when this myth is seriously questioned and the entire edifice of the Modern project begins to crumble at its base. From here I focus on more recent technoscientific utopias that culminate in transhumanism and show a propensity in taking up this myth once again. Finally\, I give several comments on the religious dimensions of transhumanism and assert that the myth of progress is one of its core doctrines. \nDr Michael Burdett is Assistant Professor of Christian Theology at the University of Nottingham and an associate of the Ian Ramsey Centre for Science and Religion\, University of Oxford. Before becoming an academic and completing his DPhil at the University of Oxford\, Michael worked in the aerospace and robotics industries for several years working with a firm that had contracts with NASA and JPL. He holds degrees in engineering\, physics\, and theology and has been given academic and professional awards in each field. His academic interests lie at the intersection of science and technology\, theology and philosophy. He has published and presented internationally on continental philosophy\, evolution\, the technological society and Christian theology. He is a series editor for the Routledge Science and Religion series  (with Mark Harris) and his major works include Technology and the Rise of Transhumanism: Beyond Genetic Engineering (Grove\, 2014)\, Eschatology and the Technological Future (Routledge\, 2015) and Finding Ourselves After Darwin: Conversations about the Image of God\, Original Sin\, and the Problem of Evil (Baker Academic\, 2018). \nHe has lead several funded science and religion projects including “Co-creating Ourselves?: Deification and Creaturehood in an Age of Biotechnological Enhancement” (JTF)\, “Bridging the Two Cultures of Science and Humanities” (TRT and Blankemeyer) and “Christian Flourishing in a Technological World” (Issachar). He is currently leading a grant entitled “Biocultural Evolution and Theological Anthropology” (JTF) and working on his next book tentatively titled Death and Glory: Humanism\, Transhumanism and Christianity. \nRegistration will open in autumn 2022.

SUMMARY:Nature and Grace: A Thomistic Introduction
DESCRIPTION:Nature and Grace: A Thomistic Introduction\nThomas Joseph White\, OP\nSimon Francis Gaine\, OP\n29 October 2022\nColégio de São Tomás – Quinta das Conchas\nLanguage: English \nHow can one understand philosophically what nature is\, and what human nature is specifically? How should one understand the theological notion of grace and how do grace and nature relate to another? Thomas Aquinas offers clear analysis of both these questions and this seminar will seek to examine his answers. Perhaps unsurprisingly\, St Thomas’ notions of human nature\, human longing for happiness and truth\, and the promise of grace and its role in our lives is of great relevance in our contemporary epoch. \nJoin us in Lisbon for this conference on nature and grace according to St Thomas Aquinas\, given by the Rector Magnificus Fr Thomas Joseph White\, OP\, and the Director of the Angelicum Thomistic Institute Fr Simon Francis Gaine\, OP. \nCoffee breaks and a snack lunch will be available for registered participants. \nClick HERE to register.\nLodging aid can be provided for a limited number of attendees chosen through a selection process. In case you are traveling from outside of Lisbon and is interested in receiving this aid\, please fill the corresponding questions on the registration form linked above. \nThis conference will not be live-streamed and it is not possible to attend it online.\n\nPUST-Angelicum website link \n\n\n\n\n ADD TO CALENDAR

SUMMARY:JP2 Lectures // Joseph Weiler: A Non-Christian Europe – Is It Possible?
DESCRIPTION:A Non-Christian Europe – Is It Possible?\nProfessor Joseph Weiler – New York University School of Law\n19 October 2022 4:30 PM\, Angelicum\, Aula 11\nLanguage: English \nOn Wednesday\, October 19\, 2022\, we invite you to the first lecture of the 2022-23 “JP2 Lectures” series\, organized by the St. John Paul II Institute of Culture at the Angelicum\, which will be given by Professor Joseph Weiler (New York University School of Law). The lecture titled “A Non-Christian Europe – Is It Possible?” will begin at 4.30 PM (CET) in Aula 11 at the Angelicum (address: Largo Angelicum\, 1\, 00184 Roma). \nThere is only one meaningful sense in which Europe could be truly Christian: If a majority of its citizens and residents were faithful\, practicing Christians. If one is to accept this as the determinant criterion\, as Benedict XVI (who is to John Paul II what Joshua was to Moses) has said more than once\, faithful\, practicing Christians have become a minority in Europe. In this sense\, a Non-Christian Europe is not merely possible\, it is a reality.  \nThis said\, it is quite another thing if Europe is to become\, and there are alarming signs in this respect\, Anti-Christian – Christophobic. Put differently\, if Europe is to turn its back on the fundamental\, indispensable centrality of the Christian tradition and ethic to Europe’s cultural and moral identity and if secularism is to become the new ‘Confessional State’.  \nThe most pressing issue is what role and strategy Christians should play and adopt in the face of this emerging reality. It is to this issue that the comments in my lecture will be addressed. \nJ.H.H. Weiler is University Professor at NYU Law School and Senior Fellow at the Center for European Studies at Harvard. He served previously as President of the European University Institute\, Florence. Prof. Weiler is Co-Editor-in-Chief of the European Journal of International Law (EJIL) and the International Journal of Constitutional Law (ICON). He is the recipient of a doctorate honoris causa from the Catholic University of America. One of his notable books is Un’Europa Cristiana: Un saggio esplorativo which has been translated into eight languages. \nProfessor Joseph H.H. Weiler is the winner of the Ratzinger Prize 2022\, the prestigious award that is given to scholars who stand out for their scientific research in the theological field. \nPlease watch their YouTube Link. \n

SUMMARY:Beyond Human: Transhumanism\, Christianity\, and the Challenge of the Future
DESCRIPTION:Angelicum Thomistic Institute – Science & Religion Online Series\nBeyond Human: Transhumanism\, Christianity\, and the Challenge of the Future\nRon Cole-Turner\nPittsburgh Theological Seminary\n12 October 2022\n7:00 PM (Rome) / 6:00 PM (London) / 1:00 PM (New York)\nLanguage: English \nHuman enhancement through technology is becoming commonplace\, with many turning to biomedical advances not just to treat diseases but to enhance their athletic abilities\, good looks\, cognitive abilities\, or long lifespan. But can technology really improve or enhance humanity? Transhumanists believe it can\, and their arguments present a powerful challenge to traditional or static modes of thought about human nature. Transhumanism raises new questions for humanity as a species. Will future human beings become “trans-humans” or “post-humans\,” even to the point of becoming a different species? How will individual human beings find their way in a culture of never-ending possibilities for personal reinvention? Can Christian theology survive in such a culture\, and will it have anything valuable to offer in response? In this lecture\, the changeable nature of the human and the enigma of human nature in a transhumanist age will be explored from a theological perspective. \nRon Cole-Turner is Professor of Theology (emeritus) at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary in Pittsburgh\, Pennsylvania. He holds a Ph.D. in theology from Princeton Theological Seminary and is an ordained Protestant minister in the United Church of Christ. He is a founding member of the International Society for Science and Religion\, serving on its Executive Committee. Over the past decade he has served as co-chair of the American Academy of Religion Unit on “Human Enhancement and Transhumanism.” Recent books include a study of human evolution and its theological significance\, entitled The End of Adam and Eve: Theology and the Science of Human Origins (2016); and Christian Perspectives on Transhumanism and the Church: Chips in the Brain\, Immortality\, and the World of Tomorrow (2018\, co-edited with Steve Donaldson). Other publications include Transhumanism and Transcendence: Christian Hope in an Age of Technological Enhancement; The New Genesis: Theology and the Genetic Revolution; Pastoral Genetics: Theology and Care at the Beginning of Life (co-authored with Brent Waters); Human Cloning: Religious Responses; Beyond Cloning: Religion and the Remaking of Humanity; God and the Embryo: Religious Voices on Stem Cells and Cloning; Design and Destiny: Jewish and Christian Perspectives on Human Germline Modification. \nClick here to register.\nPUST-Angelicum website link

SUMMARY:II Encuentro universitario tomista: Amor divino y vida humana

SUMMARY:La religion à la loupe des médias (Religion under the Scrutiny of Media)
DESCRIPTION:La religion à la loupe des médias (Religion under the Scrutiny of Media) \nby: Père Albert Hisham  \nJune 4\, 2022 \nACADEMIE DE BAGDAD POUR LES SCIENCES HUMAINE  \nPourquoi une académie des sciences humaines ? \nACADEMIE DE BAGDAD Fr \nBAGHDAD ACADEMY FOR HUMAN SCIENCES
