DESCRIPTION:JP2 Lectures // R.R. Reno: Christians in the face of political polarization\nOn Wednesday\, March 15\, 2023\, we invite you to the seventh JP2 Lecture\, which will be given by R. R. Reno\, Editor of First Things. The lecture entitled “Christians in the Face of Political Polarization” will begin at 4:30 p.m. (CET) in Aula 11 at the Angelicum (Largo Angelicum\, 1\, 00184 Rome). \n\nStudents are also invited to an open seminar with prof. R. R. Reno which will take place before the lecture: on Wednesday\, 10:30-11:30am in Aula 15.\n\n\n\nThe topic of the discussion will be “The Postmodern Context for Theology\,” drawing on excerpts from two books: Return of the Strong Gods by R. R. Reno\, and The Triumph of the Therapeutic by Philip Rieff.\n\n\n\nR. R. Reno has served as Editor of First Things since 2011. He received his PhD in theology from Yale University\, and taught theology and ethics at Creighton University in Omaha\, Nebraska for twenty years. He has published in many academic journals\, and his opinion essays have appeared in Commentary\, National Review\, the Wall Street Journal\, Washington Post\, and New York Times\, and other popular outlets. DESCRIPTION:Thomism and Analytic Philosophy: The Promises and Perils of Dialogue\n\nMarch 14 at 2:30 pm – March 15 at 5:30 pm –  Angelicum\, Aula Minor\n\nLargo Angelicum\, 1 Rome\, Italy 00184\nLanguage: English\nTheme of the Conference:\nDialogue across philosophical traditions\, like dialogue across disciplinary fields\, is a dangerous enterprise. It comes with the danger of misunderstanding and the danger of being misunderstood\, the danger of creating difficulties where no difficulties exist\, and the danger of dismissing difficulties that will not go away even if we ignore them. In the contemporary philosophical academy\, moreover\, these dangers are only aggravated by widespread institutional pressures for philosophers to specialize their research. The more we dedicate ourselves to a single topic\, within a single field of a single philosophical tradition\, the less likely we are to engage with scholars who work on other topics in other fields—lets alone other philosophical traditions. \nAt the same time\, dialogue also seems to be uniquely characteristic of philosophy. This is true not just because some of the greatest philosophical works were written in dialogue form\, or because philosophy\, historically\, seems to have sprung out of a dialogical context\, but more importantly because philosophers seem to be uniquely well suited for dialogue: we dialogue with physicists and film-makers\, mathematicians and musicians\, historians\, politicians\, theologians\, and a great many others. It would be strange\, indeed\, if philosophers can dialogue widely beyond the bounds of their own discipline\, but cannot dialogue widely within the bounds of their own discipline. \nThe purpose of this conference\, then\, is to explore the possibility of dialogue between two rich philosophical traditions\, namely\, Thomism and analytic philosophy. We will neither shy away from the dangers that come with attempting such a dialogue\, nor will we turn a blind eye to the benefits that such dialogue may bring. Moreover\, we will be even-handed in our representation of the two traditions. SUMMARY:Beauty and Religiosity in Science
DESCRIPTION:  \nBeauty and Religiosity in Science\n9 March 2023\nAula Minor\, Angelicum\nLanguage: English\nBeauty and Science\nWhat role does beauty play in science? To address this question\, this lecture draws on data from the world’s first empirical study of the role of beauty in science\, conducted in the UK\, US\, Italy\, and India. After analyzing surveys of more than 3000 physicists and biologists and in-depth interviews with more than 200 of them\, we identify ways in which scientists’ aesthetic experiences shape the practice of science and the well-being of scientists. The presentation will also assess the relationship between scientists’ aesthetic experiences and their religious/spiritual commitments. \nAbout the Speaker: Dr. Brandon Vaidyanathan is an Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Sociology at The Catholic University of America. He holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Business Administration from St. Francis Xavier University in Nova Scotia and HEC Montreal respectively\, and a Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Notre Dame. \nDr. Vaidyanathan’s research examines the cultural dimensions of religious\, commercial\, medical\, and scientific institutions\, and has been published in journals such as Business and Society\, Journal of the American Academy of Religion\, Social Forces\, Social Problems\, Sociology of Religion\, Journal for the Scientific Study of Religion\, Journal for the Theory of Social Behavior\, and Work\, Employment\, and Society. His research has been funded by grants from the John Templeton Foundation\, Templeton Religion Trust\, and the Lilly Endowment. \nThis lecture is made possible by a grant from the Templeton Religion Trust (#TRT0296\, PI: Brandon Vaidyanathan). \nClick Here to Register \nFor more information\, you may open the PUST-Angelicum Thomistic Institute website

He is professor of philosophy at the Dominican School of Philosophy and Theology in Berkeley and currently the chair of the philosophy department. He obtained his doctorate under Robert Spaemann in Munich on Leibniz and the Spanish Jesuits (Gott\, Freiheit\, Weltenwahl\, 1997) and did theological work on George Lindbeck and the question of a Thomist philosophy and theology of language (Beyond Modernism?  George Lindbeck and the Linguistic Turn in Theology\, 2005). He contributed articles to the Historisches Wörterbuch der Philosophy and essays on topics at the intersection of philosophy and theology\, as well as a translation and commentary on part of Aquinas’ De veritate. She then returned to Catholic University\, and in 2019 completed a doctorate in philosophy. Her dissertation was on “Noetic Thinking in Aristotle’s De Anima III.6.” Sister previously taught as a First Year Experience fellow at the university and as an adjunct professor at Aquinas College. The lecture entitled “Reset or Revolution? Contemporary Problems of Political Stability and Some Ancient Solutions” will begin at 3:00 p.m. (CET) in Aula 11 at the Angelicum (Largo Angelicum\, 1\, 00184 Rome). \nCan political and legal stability be a political problem? Is it possible that what seems to be the goal and the best fruit of good policy can lead to degeneration of the political system\, injustice and crisis? How does stability relate to conflicts and deep divisions within Western societies? Has history known political crises similar to the one tearing Western societies apart today? Have effective solutions ever been found to deal with the toxic side effects of stability? If so\, what did they consist of? Can we apply them to our problems? This is a list of questions I will try to answer in my lecture – Dariusz Karłowicz \nDariusz Karłowicz – philosopher\, lecturer\, publicist\, book publisher. Co-founder and editor-in-chief of the philosophical yearbook “Teologia Polityczna” and president of the Saint Nicholas Foundation. In 1997\, he was awarded the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the Institute of Philosophy and Sociology of the Polish Academy of Sciences (thesis under the supervision of Professor Juliusz Domański). In 2005\, he published the book “Socrates and Other Saints”\, which deals with the philosophical foundations of the ideas represented by the early Christians and the Fathers of the Church. The book resonated with the public and received positive reviews in both the Catholic and the large-circulation mainstream press. In 2017\, the book was translated into English under the title “Socrates and Other Saints: Early Christian Understandings of Reason and Philosophy”. This improved understanding of how the sciences work has led (at least within the philosophy of science community) to the realization that physical theories should not be interpreted literally\, and that the mathematical structure of a theory is not a straightforward guide to the metaphysics of the entities described by that theory. On the other hand\, the philosophical discussion of modeling\, metaphor and idealization — and the relationship of these notions to truth is not new and has a long pedigree within the Aristotelian-Thomistic tradition. His work on Christ’s passions recently appeared in the European Journal for the Study of Thomas Aquinas and his other writings on the passions and on bioethics have appeared in New Blackfriars and National Catholic Bioethics Quarterly. His current research focuses on the sources that Aquinas used in developing his understanding of virtue and on recovering ancient and medieval wisdom regarding economics in order to apply this wisdom to contemporary financial problems (like student loan debt). \nDr. Dugandzic has taught courses in fundamental moral theology\, bioethics\, theological anthropology\, and Catholic social teaching. In addition to his work in the academy\, Dr. Dugandzic has also brought his theological expertise to the aid of the Church\, having taught theology to RCIA groups\, catechists\, and candidates for the permanent diaconate. \nIn addition to his doctorate\, Dr. Dugandzic holds a BSc in biology from Concordia University in Montréal\, Québec and an MA in religious studies from St. Joseph’s Seminary in Yonkers\, New York. He and his wife\, Audra\, live in Baltimore\, MD. Michael Nazir-Ali // Course “The emergence of the notion of person in the West\, human dignity\, equality and liberty in Christian and secular thought”\nAlongside the ‘descending theme’ of Christian influence on governance and law in the western world\, I intend also to explore an ‘ascending theme’ which comes to prominence from the time of St Thomas Aquinas and is developed in the Dominican tradition in a variety of ways. This theme is focused on an emphasis on the person as a moral and spiritual agent\, leading to a greater recognition of agency\, conscience\, choice and consent. As is increasingly acknowledged\, such a view is itself rooted in the biblical witness and\, particularly\, in the thought of St Paul. I hope to go on to ask about its relevance for the debate about ‘natural rights’ in the early modern period and its relation to Enlightenment thought\, both moderate and radical. I shall then consider whether a proper view of fundamental freedoms is best safeguarded by relying on reason alone\, as argued for by some Enlightenment and modern thinkers or whether cumulative tradition is a better guide. Yet\, the Christian and the secular desire for the transcendent differ considerably. Speaking from the perspective of the Aristotelian-Thomistic tradition of philosophy and theology\, I will compare and critically analyze (1) the object\, (2) the subject\, (3) the way of the fulfillment\, as well as (4) the metaphysical presuppositions that motivate both approaches. Critical about the project of trans- and posthumanism\, I will argue that Christians do not have to radically oppose all changes introduced to human nature that go beyond medical and psychological therapy. \nMariusz Tabaczek\, O.P.\, is a Polish Dominican and theologian. He holds Ph.D. in philosophical theology from the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley\, CA and Church Licentiate from the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan\, Poland. After his studies at the GTU and a fellowship at the Notre Dame Institute for Advanced Studies he returned to Poland. For three years he worked as a researcher at the Thomistic Institute in Warsaw (Poland)\, a lecturer at the Pontifical Faculty of Theology in Warsaw and the Dominican School of Philosophy and Theology in Krakow\, and a director of Studium Dominicanum in Warsaw. He then moved to Rome where he became a professor of theology at the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas. But what could that mean today in the context of the Church’s life in Asia with its diverse cultures and religious as well as secular philosophical traditions? What does it mean to speak realistically about Aquinas for Asia? \nThis day-long conference at the Angelicum will explore Aquinas’s thought in conversation with classical Hindu traditions\, principles of Buddhist doctrine\, and elements from classical and contemporary Chinese and Southeast Asian political thought.
