She holds a Ph.D. in Theology from the University of Notre Dame\, and a Master’s in Liturgical Studies from the Liturgical Institute. Her book\, The Glory of God’s Grace: Deification according to St. Thomas Aquinas\, was published by Sapientia Press in 2015. She has published 10 scholarly articles in Nova et Vetera\, Cistercian Studies and the Journal of Moral Theology\, and chapters in several edited volumes\, including Aquinas on Initiation and Mystagogy (Peeters\, 2019)\, Reading Job with St. Thomas Aquinas (CUA Press\, 2020)\, Thomas Aquinas\, Biblical Theologian (Emmaus Academic\, 2021)\, and Thomas Aquinas and the Crisis of Christology (Sapientia Press\, 2021). Among other projects\, she is currently coediting a volume\, Christ\, the Wisdom of God in the Thought of St. Thomas Aquinas. \n\n\nFr. Andrew Hofer\, O.P. (Dominican House of Studies) grew up as the youngest of ten children on a farm in Kansas\, and studied history\, philosophy\, and classics at Benedictine College. He then went to St Andrews\, Scotland for a Master of Letters in medieval history. He entered the Order of Preachers as a son of the Province of St. Joseph\, and was ordained a priest in 2002. After finishing his S.T.L. and serving as an associate pastor for a brief time\, he was sent to Kenya as a missionary for two years. He taught at the Tangaza College of The Catholic University of Eastern Africa and other institutions in Nairobi. He returned to the U.S. and completed a Ph.D. in theology at the University of Notre Dame\, with the primary area of history of Christianity\, specializing in patristic theology with additional studies in medieval theology\, and the secondary area of systematic theology. His research appears in such journals as Vigiliae Christianae\, Augustinianum\, International Journal of Systematic Theology\, New Blackfriars\, Nova et Vetera\, Pro Ecclesia\, The Thomist\, Communio\, and Angelicum and in books published by Catholic University of America Press and Ignatius Press. He is the author of Christ in the Life and Teaching of Gregory of Nazianzus (Oxford Early Christian Studies)\, Oxford University Press\, 2013\, and the editor of Divinization: Becoming Icons of Christ through the Liturgy\, Hillenbrand Books\, 2015. \n\n\nQuestions? DESCRIPTION:Angelicum Thomistic Institute – Science & Religion Online Series “The Forgotten History of Science and Faith”\nGerbert of Aurillac: Pope and Scientist\nConstantino Sigismondi\nContract Professor in Rome Universities: Sapienza\, Unicampus and APRA\, Professor of Physics in Alessandro Volta Institute of Rome.\n12 April 2023\n7:00 PM (Rome) / 6:00 PM (London) / 1:00 PM (New York)\nLanguage: English \nA passionating history\, which has be seen as the ideal self-made man\, or the genius prevailing against all odds.\nReliably Gerbert was noble and cadet\, monk and mathematical genius\, so he could move from Aurillac to Catalunya around 969\, were he met the mozarabic science world and developed some original algorithms either in mathematics and in music\, as in the treatises on the Abacus and on the Orgue’s tubes lengths\, written in Reims where he was called as scholarch since 972 by Archbishop Adalbero. In 991 he become Archbishop of Reims after the discussed deposition of Arnulf. Pope John XV did not accept such deposition and Gerbert went to the court of the young Emperor Otto III to be his teacher. He encouraged the election of Bruno of Carinthia\, Gregory V\, cousin of Otto III\, to strengthen the relationship between Church and Empire. Gregory moved the exiliated archbishop Gerbert from Reims to Ravenna\, and his sudden death in 999 determined the election of Gerbert to the Roman Pontificate. Never before such a prominent scholarly figure\, renowned in all Europe for his science\, become Pope (999-1003). During his papacy the young Emperor died in January 1002 and the political situation in Rome remained in strong tension\, but respected the wise Pope. \nThe historiography on Gerbert assumed some mithological elements due to the uncommon genius\, until 1640\, after Baronius\, when the Polish Dominican Bzovsky wrote a first biography based on his works and letters. In XIX century his mathematical works were reviewed by Bubnov and in XX century his music works come out thanks to Sachs. The astronomy of Gerbert was known and studied as well\, and his Epistolarium edited in several languages (Pratt Lattin in English\, Pierre Riché in French\, Panvini Carciotto in Italian). Flavio Nuvolone in Switzerland promoted the studies on Gerbert of Aurillac since 1983 to his death 2019: they are in the books in Italian “The Number and The Cross” (2012) and “From Gerbert to Sylvester II” (2013)\, were he was able to decodificate the underlying text in the Carme Figuratum\, about the first introduction in Europe of Hindu-Arabic numbers\, by Gerbert. \nJoin us\, as we rediscover the forgotten history of Science and Faith. \nClick Here to Register\nPUST-Angelicum Thomistic Institute website link

Innocent Smith\, O.P. is Assistant Professor of Homiletics at St. Mary’s Seminary and University. His research interests are at the intersection of liturgy and theology\, including sacramental theology\, homiletics\, liturgical manuscripts\, ecclesiology\, and sacred music. He is a Roman Catholic priest and a member of Province of St. Joseph of the Order of Preachers. He is presently assigned to the Dominican community of Sts. Philip and James in Baltimore\, MD. \nSmith’s forthcoming monograph\, “Bible Missals and the Dominican Liturgy\,” focuses on medieval bibles which contain liturgical texts for the celebration of the Mass. The liturgical selections contained in bible missals give precious insight into both the development of the celebration of the liturgy as well as the processes of customization and design of medieval bibles. Professor Brague will teach an intensive course titled “Europe’s Philosophical Identity” as part of the 2nd Cycle in Philosophy and of the JP2 Studies program run by the St. John Paul II Institute of Culture. The course will begin on March 23 and continue until March 31. Angelicum students are invited to audit the lectures.  \nCourse description:\nEurope is clumsily groping for her political identity. Her far older cultural identity looks easier to assess. Yet\, the question of what European culture might be deserves asking. I suggest to look for the sources (not “roots”) of said identity in the basic experiences of the world which are summarized in the names “Athens” and “Jerusalem”\, and in the way both were mediated by the Roman experience. Europe’s cultural identity proves to be eccentric: the points of reference are neither inside of the European space nor already given. They have to be acquired by learning. This talk will begin by examining the historical origins of the concept\, showing how it emerged from a constellation of political\, social\, and\npeculiar personal circumstances of the late 19 th century. It will then explore the resilience of the concept and how\, why\, and by whom it has been perpetuated down to the present day\, and suggests some means by which it could be more effectively countered. \nAbout the Speaker: Lawrence M. Principe is the Drew Professor of Humanities at Johns Hopkins University in the Departments of History of Science and Technology and of Chemistry. He holds a Ph.D in Organic Chemistry from Indiana University\, Bloomington\, and a Ph.D. in History of Science from Johns Hopkins. His research focusses on late Medieval and early modern alchemy/chemistry and the interactions of science and religion. His recent books include The Scientific Revolution: A Very Short Introduction (Oxford\, 2011)\, The Secrets of Alchemy (Chicago\, 2013)\, and The Transmutations of Chymistry: Wilhelm Homberg and the Académie Royale des Sciences (Chicago\, 2020). He also produced the 12-lecture course “Science and Religion” for The Teaching Company. DESCRIPTION:Thomism and Analytic Philosophy: The Promises and Perils of Dialogue\n\nMarch 14 at 2:30 pm – March 15 at 5:30 pm –  Angelicum\, Aula Minor\n\nLargo Angelicum\, 1 Rome\, Italy 00184\nLanguage: English\nTheme of the Conference:\nDialogue across philosophical traditions\, like dialogue across disciplinary fields\, is a dangerous enterprise. It comes with the danger of misunderstanding and the danger of being misunderstood\, the danger of creating difficulties where no difficulties exist\, and the danger of dismissing difficulties that will not go away even if we ignore them. In the contemporary philosophical academy\, moreover\, these dangers are only aggravated by widespread institutional pressures for philosophers to specialize their research. The more we dedicate ourselves to a single topic\, within a single field of a single philosophical tradition\, the less likely we are to engage with scholars who work on other topics in other fields—lets alone other philosophical traditions. \nAt the same time\, dialogue also seems to be uniquely characteristic of philosophy. This is true not just because some of the greatest philosophical works were written in dialogue form\, or because philosophy\, historically\, seems to have sprung out of a dialogical context\, but more importantly because philosophers seem to be uniquely well suited for dialogue: we dialogue with physicists and film-makers\, mathematicians and musicians\, historians\, politicians\, theologians\, and a great many others. It would be strange\, indeed\, if philosophers can dialogue widely beyond the bounds of their own discipline\, but cannot dialogue widely within the bounds of their own discipline. \nThe purpose of this conference\, then\, is to explore the possibility of dialogue between two rich philosophical traditions\, namely\, Thomism and analytic philosophy. We will neither shy away from the dangers that come with attempting such a dialogue\, nor will we turn a blind eye to the benefits that such dialogue may bring. Moreover\, we will be even-handed in our representation of the two traditions. DESCRIPTION:  \nBeauty and Religiosity in Science\n9 March 2023\nAula Minor\, Angelicum\nLanguage: English\nBeauty and Science\nWhat role does beauty play in science? To address this question\, this lecture draws on data from the world’s first empirical study of the role of beauty in science\, conducted in the UK\, US\, Italy\, and India. After analyzing surveys of more than 3000 physicists and biologists and in-depth interviews with more than 200 of them\, we identify ways in which scientists’ aesthetic experiences shape the practice of science and the well-being of scientists. The presentation will also assess the relationship between scientists’ aesthetic experiences and their religious/spiritual commitments. \nAbout the Speaker: Dr. Brandon Vaidyanathan is an Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Sociology at The Catholic University of America. He obtained his doctorate under Robert Spaemann in Munich on Leibniz and the Spanish Jesuits (Gott\, Freiheit\, Weltenwahl\, 1997) and did theological work on George Lindbeck and the question of a Thomist philosophy and theology of language (Beyond Modernism?  George Lindbeck and the Linguistic Turn in Theology\, 2005). She then returned to Catholic University\, and in 2019 completed a doctorate in philosophy. Her dissertation was on “Noetic Thinking in Aristotle’s De Anima III.6.” Sister previously taught as a First Year Experience fellow at the university and as an adjunct professor at Aquinas College. The lecture entitled “Reset or Revolution? Contemporary Problems of Political Stability and Some Ancient Solutions” will begin at 3:00 p.m. (CET) in Aula 11 at the Angelicum (Largo Angelicum\, 1\, 00184 Rome). \nCan political and legal stability be a political problem? Is it possible that what seems to be the goal and the best fruit of good policy can lead to degeneration of the political system\, injustice and crisis? How does stability relate to conflicts and deep divisions within Western societies? Has history known political crises similar to the one tearing Western societies apart today? Have effective solutions ever been found to deal with the toxic side effects of stability? If so\, what did they consist of? Can we apply them to our problems? This is a list of questions I will try to answer in my lecture – Dariusz Karłowicz \nDariusz Karłowicz – philosopher\, lecturer\, publicist\, book publisher. Co-founder and editor-in-chief of the philosophical yearbook “Teologia Polityczna” and president of the Saint Nicholas Foundation. In 1997\, he was awarded the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the Institute of Philosophy and Sociology of the Polish Academy of Sciences (thesis under the supervision of Professor Juliusz Domański). In 2005\, he published the book “Socrates and Other Saints”\, which deals with the philosophical foundations of the ideas represented by the early Christians and the Fathers of the Church. The book resonated with the public and received positive reviews in both the Catholic and the large-circulation mainstream press. In 2017\, the book was translated into English under the title “Socrates and Other Saints: Early Christian Understandings of Reason and Philosophy”. This improved understanding of how the sciences work has led (at least within the philosophy of science community) to the realization that physical theories should not be interpreted literally\, and that the mathematical structure of a theory is not a straightforward guide to the metaphysics of the entities described by that theory. DESCRIPTION:Johns Hopkins Medical University\nThe Johns Hopkins Medical University presents a lecture by Prof. Matthew Dugandzic of St. Mary’s Seminary and University titled “The Ethics of Reproductive Technologies.” \nWednesday\, February 22 \n12:00 PM – 1:30 PM \nTurner Auditorium \nAbout the speaker \nMatthew Dugandzic joined the theology faculty at St. Mary’s Seminary and University in 2019 after completing a Ph.D. in moral theology at The Catholic University of America in Washington\, DC. His dissertation\, “A Thomistic Account of the Habituation of the Passions\,” explored the ways in which people can develop virtuous affective inclinations. \nDr. Dugandzic’s scholarship focuses on medieval thought\, especially Thomas Aquinas’ anthropology\, psychology\, and ethics. His work on Christ’s passions recently appeared in the European Journal for the Study of Thomas Aquinas and his other writings on the passions and on bioethics have appeared in New Blackfriars and National Catholic Bioethics Quarterly. His current research focuses on the sources that Aquinas used in developing his understanding of virtue and on recovering ancient and medieval wisdom regarding economics in order to apply this wisdom to contemporary financial problems (like student loan debt). \nDr. Dugandzic has taught courses in fundamental moral theology\, bioethics\, theological anthropology\, and Catholic social teaching. In addition to his work in the academy\, Dr. Dugandzic has also brought his theological expertise to the aid of the Church\, having taught theology to RCIA groups\, catechists\, and candidates for the permanent diaconate. \nIn addition to his doctorate\, Dr. Dugandzic holds a BSc in biology from Concordia University in Montréal\, Québec and an MA in religious studies from St. Joseph’s Seminary in Yonkers\, New York. He and his wife\, Audra\, live in Baltimore\, MD. In his spare time\, he likes to play hockey\, which he enjoys almost as much as reading theology. \nThis lecture is free and open to the public. \nThomistic Institute Conference link
