SUMMARY:Mystik und Lebenskunst: Meister Eckhart und Marguerite Porète

\nFr. Georges Alahou\, OP.\nConseiller pour la Vie Intellectuelle (IAOP) \n  \nGROUNDWORK FOR THE ORGANIZATION OF THE 2026 COLLOQUIUM\nINTRODUCTION \nDear Friars\,\nAllow me to remind you that during our last meeting of the Regents and Coordinators of Studies\,\nthe idea of organizing a colloquium was conceived. The initial outlines of this idea were to not\nleave unexplored the themes delineated by Fr. Akin Odiko\, OP\, my predecessor – themes intended\nto result in the publication of a book by the IAOP.\nWe also wished that\, at the end of the colloquium\, the presentations would be selected for\npublication\, in order to breathe new life into the original idea of a book publication associated with\nthe themes proposed by Fr. Akin\, as I have already mentioned.\nOrganizing a colloquium can be a complex task. That is why we are invited to examine together\nfrom now on how to create a successful event.\nThe points below seem indispensable to me (and can be supplemented during our discussions) to\ndefine what needs to be done and how to do it. These guidelines will allow us to systematically\nprogress in organizing this colloquium\, which is scheduled to coincide with the next IAOP summit\nin 2026 (the specific location to be determined during the IAOP mini-summit in March 2025). I\ninvite you to read them attentively and to enrich them if necessary\, with a view to a meeting rich\nin constructive ideas that will allow us to take the next step in this project. \nA. Development of a preliminary program\n1. Define the objective and scope of the colloquium: We need to determine the main subject\nof the colloquium\, the themes to explore\, and the objectives we wish to achieve. \n2. Form an organizing committee: We need to assemble a competent team to plan and\ncoordinate the event. We must ensure that each committee member has clear\nresponsibilities and effective communication.\n3. Choose a date and location: This is a task for the Mini-Summit of March 2025. However\,\nwe can make proposals for the Mini-Summit to consider. We need to select dates that are\nconvenient for the target participants and find an appropriate venue that offers the\nnecessary facilities for the expected number of participants. [A question to consider in this\nregard is: How many participants do we envision for the Colloquium?]\n4. Develop a budget: We need to estimate the costs associated with renting the space\, food\nand refreshments\, speaker travel expenses\, event promotion\, and the subsequent\npublication of the Colloquium Proceedings. We must ensure with the socius for Africa and\nthe IAOP syndic that adequate funding is available to cover these expenses. \n5. Select the speakers: We need to identify the speakers to invite and potential contributors.\nThis must be done as soon as possible so that contact can be made in time to check their\navailability and interest in participating. (My suggestion is to prioritize capable brothers\nfrom our various entities\, taking into account both English and French languages\,\npreferably). \nB. Ensure follow-up\n6. Establish committees: For the follow-up of preliminary organization (contacts to be made\,\ncollection of participant information\, etc.); for the event execution (logistical details such as\ncatering\, accommodation for speakers\, audiovisual technology\, visual aids\, document printing\,\netc.); and for post-colloquium (gathering participant feedback\, event evaluation\, and thanking the\nspeakers for their contributions). \nBro Georges Alahou\, OP\nIAOP – Councillor for Intellectual Life \n\n  \nView Synonyms and Definitions

SUMMARY:Understanding the Old Testament as Christian Scripture
DESCRIPTION:Understanding the Old Testament as Christian Scripture\nAn International Symposium with a call for papers\n17-20 June 2024\nPontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas (Angelicum)\nThe field of modern biblical studies has given rise to a great deal of insight and a plethora of information about distinct\, ancient writings that we traditionally call the Old Testament. Today\, expert specialisation in regard to distinct books of the Bible and their composition is prevalent. However\, it is also the case that ancient\, medieval\, and modern Christian theologians have understood the Old Testament to be a united source\, consisting of different authors\, styles and genres\, and composed in different languages\, yet all speaking in one symphonic way as the living Word of God. \nHow today\, in a post-historical critical context can a Christian theology\, informed by modern Biblical studies\, recover a sense of the Old Testament in the Church and for the Church as the living Word of God fulfilled in Christ? How can it do so while acknowledging not only the human authorship of the Bible but also the way Christians engage in the Bible in conversation with the Jewish people\, the secular world\, and other non-Christian religious traditions? What does it mean to think about Israel\, canon\, and Christ? \nThis conference brings together a wide array of experts in biblical\, patristic\, and contemporary theology to reflect on Scripture as the root and source of Christian theology in an ecumenical context. \nThis conference is part of the Project for the Theological Reception of Scripture. \nMain Session Speakers and Tentative Topics\nDale C. Allison (Princeton Theological Seminary): Jesus and the Jewish Bible \nGary A. We do\, however\, ask that you please register in advance by clicking here. \nCall for Papers\nFor afternoon breakout sessions\, we are seeking papers. Paper presentations will be 30 minutes long followed by a brief question and answer period. \nSome suggested session topics include: \n\nOld Testament Eschatology\nChristian Old Testament and Relations with Living Judaism\nOn the Theological Significance of the Septuagint\nChristian Theological Hermeneutics and the Old Testament\nDifficult Passages in the Old Testament\nProblems of a Historical Canon in Ecumenical Perspective: Catholic and Protestant Conceptions of Canon\nNew Testament Apocalyptic and the Use of the Old Testament\nThe Old Testament Interpreted in New Testament Christology\n\nOther topics will also be considered. \nAbstracts of 500 words or less must be submitted by 30 September 2023 through this form. Birlikte\, Akdeniz’in “hafızasını” sadece zengin geçmişiyle ilişkili olarak değil\, aynı zamanda pratiğe\, kişisel ve sosyal gerçekliğin dönüşümüne yönlendirmeyi seçerek rehabilite ediyorlar. Bu şekilde teolojinin eleştirel işlevini vurgulayarak\, onu ilahi olanın epifanisiyle sürekli diyalog halindeyken insanın hizmetine sunarlar. Böylece\, “sınır “dan gelen eski Mare nostrum’u\, geçilmesi bizi öteki yapan “eşik” haline gelir. \n2 – New book \n  \nWe are delighted to announce the publication of “La misura mediterranea dell’umano”\, a new book by Claudio Monge and Giuseppina De Simone. \nClaudio Monge and Giuseppina De Simone affirm the need to protect the diversity\, which has always enriched this crossroads of cultures\, through a new theological proposal. Together\, they rehabilitate the “memory” of the Mediterranean not only in relation to its rich past\, but choosing to orientate it to practice\, to the transformation of personal and social reality. Accentuating in this way the critical function of theology\, they place it at the service of the human\, while in constant dialogue with the epiphany of the divine. Thus\, the ancient Mare nostrum from “border” again becomes “threshold\,” the crossing of which makes us other. \nFor further details click here. \n

SUMMARY:Miracles: Scientific\, Philosophical\, and Theological Perspectives
DESCRIPTION:The Angelicum Thomistic Institute Project for Science and Religion Presents:\nMiracles: Scientific\, Philosophical\, and Theological Perspectives\n1-2 March 2024\nAngelicum – Aula Minor \n  \nAims of the Conference:\nMiracles are one of the core features of the Christian religion\, as well as many other faiths. The most foundational miracles are those described throughout the biblical narrative. However\, there have been continued reports of miraculous events even to this day\, and some have become important in popular piety and the faith of individual believers. In light of the advances of modern science and our deeper understanding of the physical and biological world\, many have claimed that such miraculous events\, ancient or contemporary\, are implausible if not strictly impossible. In this conference we will consider the miraculous with the tools of contemporary theology\, philosophy\, and science. Drawing on the insights of an international collection of specialists\, we will address various foundational questions about God’s supernatural action in the world: What exactly is a miracle? In light of advances in science and philosophy\, are miracles possible? If so\, can modern science help identify and understand miraculous events? What role should miracles play in our personal Christian faith? Is it reasonable for scientists to believe in particular miracles\, and if so\, when? Does nature need special divine action in its operation and major evolutionary transitions? \nMore Details \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Discover the traditions and meaning of Ash Wednesday for Christians today!
DESCRIPTION:Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the Lenten season\, reminding us of human mortality and the need for reconciliation with God. Many Christians attend special church services where they receive ashes on their foreheads. The ashes are a visible sign of repentance and a reminder of our return to dust in death. We are called to humility and faith in God for eternal life. \nAsh Wednesday is always 46 days before Easter Sunday (40 days excluding Sundays). The observance of Ash Wednesday is rooted in various biblical traditions. In the Old Testament\, ashes were a symbol of penance and mourning\, and in the New Testament\, Jesus fasted for 40 days in the wilderness before beginning his public ministry. \nLent is a time set aside each year for similar fasting\, observing an intentional season of focus on Christ’s life\, ministry\, sacrifice\, and resurrection. The Lenten season culminates with Holy Week\, which includes Palm Sunday\, Good Friday\, and the joyous celebration of Easter. \nPRAYERFUL GREETINGS to all on this coming Season of Lent\, \nIntellectual Life Office \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:CALL FOR PAPERS: New Perspectives on the Dominican Engagement for a Catholic Dialogue with Jews and Muslims
DESCRIPTION:60 Years of Nostra Aetate\nNew Perspectives on the Dominican Engagement for a Catholic Dialogue with Jews and Muslims\nJanuary 19‒21\, 2024\, in Trier (Germany)\nFrom January 19ᵗʰ to 20ᵗʰ\, 2024\, an international conference will be held in Trier\, Germany\, on the reception of Nostra Aetate\, entitled “60 years after Nostra Aetate. New Perspectives on the Dominican Engagement for a Catholic Dialogue with Jews and Muslims”. \nAs “one of the final surprises of the Second Vatican Council”1 (Maurice Borrmans)\, its comparatively short declaration of Nostra Aetate “on the relation of the Church to non-Christian religions” (1965) marks a paradigm shift in the attitude of the Catholic Church towards other religions. Despite numerous theological —from today’s perspective— shortcomings of the Declaration\, it represents a different\, appreciative perception of other religions\, especially Judaism and Islam\, and thus laid the basis for a modern theology of religions from a Catholic perspective. \nIt is indisputable that various religious\, among them Dominicans\, played a significant role in drafting the Declaration.2 Less known is their intensive\, sometimes decades-long theological and/or practical work of preparation\, which they carried out through personal encounters with Jews and Muslims as well as through their academic study of Judaism and Islam\, paving the way for Nostra Aetate. In contrast\, other members of the Order were critical of this engagement and attempted to prevent such a far-reaching declaration of the Council\, but ultimately failed because of the Council Fathers’ call for an ‘aggiornamento’ in the Church. \nPlease continue to read on the IDEO website. \nPlease email an abstract of your paper\, up to 300 words\, and a short academic CV to halft@uni-trier.de by September 30\, 2023 (subject heading: Trier Conference 2024). \nConference date: Friday\, January 19ᵗʰ\, through Sunday\, January 21ˢᵗ\, 2024. \nConference venue: Haus der pastoralen Berufe (Conference hall II)\, Jesuitenstraße 13\, 54290 Trier\, Germany. \nConference languages: English\, French\, German (no interpretation provided). \nOrganizers: Elias H. Füllenbach OP (IGDom) / Dr. Dennis Halft OP (Faculty of Theology in Trier\, Emil Frank Institute).

SUMMARY:Subject: Inquiry Regarding Potential Meeting Scheduling and Project Progress
DESCRIPTION:Dear Regents and Coordinators of Studies\, \nI trust this message finds you well. I am reaching out to seek clarification on specific matters\npertaining to our ongoing project regarding the publication of the inaugural issue of the Journal\nunder the IAOP label.\nDue to the postponement of our previously scheduled meeting in November\, caused by the\npending official appointment of new regents to replace those who have completed their terms\, I\nam currently without any updates on this matter. Given the urgency of our timeline\, it is\nimperative that we evaluate the progress made within our respective entities concerning the\nresponsibilities entrusted to us as regents for the publication of scholarly works in the Review\nunder the IAOP label. The inaugural issue is scheduled to coincide with the feast of Saint Thomas\nAquinas on January 28\, 2024.\nTo expedite the advancement of our project\, I am reaching out to both Regents and Provincials or\nVicars of entities where Regents or coordinators are set to be appointed. It is crucial that we\naddress the following question within our entities: Does the regent oversee the processes of\ncollecting works from PhD holders in your entity? This inquiry applies\, as necessary\, to both\noutgoing and incoming regents\, as we consider administration to be a continuous process.\nI kindly request the Provincials and Vicars to follow up on this matter within their entities and\nprovide an update by Friday\, the 22nd of December. If the appointment of regents has not\nimpacted your entity\, the regent should respond directly to this inquiry and inform us if a meeting\ncan be scheduled before the end of December.\nLet us collaborate effectively to support IAOP in our collective efforts. Your prompt cooperation\nin this matter is greatly appreciated. \nFraternally in Saint Dominic\,\nBr. Georges Alahou\, O.P.\nIAOP Councillor for Intellectual Life\nDakar (Senegal) \nP.S. I am including Fr. Roger Gaise (Socius for Africa) and Fr. Carlos Pablo Sicouly (Socius for\nIntellectual Life) in copy. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Primer Congreso del Círculo Iberoamericano Meister Eckhart
\nCITeS Website link\n

SUMMARY:CALL FOR PAPERS: Eastern Catholic Theology on the Way of Unification
DESCRIPTION:CALL FOR PAPERS: Eastern Catholic Theology on the Way of Unification\nOn September 21 to 22\, 2023\, an international conference will be held at Charles University in Prague on the topic of “Eastern Catholic Theology on the Way of Unification”. \nThis international conference is intended for everyone interested in the issues of the mutual relationship between the Christian East and West\, which has crystallized in the Eastern Catholic Churches\, whose identity includes elements of the Roman Catholic tradition as well as the traditions of the Eastern\, Oriental Orthodox\, and Eastern Orthodox Churches. The aim of the conference is to discuss the self-identification of these ecclesial communities in light of their development throughout their history. And in particular of the events preceding their unification with the Roman Catholic Church (and of course the other churches sui iuris in communion with the Roman Catholic Church) and those following. We invite contributions from theologians or clergy of these churches\, as well as from all scholars interested in this topic. Our interest is to deepen the dialogue between the Christian East and West and to reveal differences\, but also to find ways of mutual understanding. Topics will cover all the major theological disciplines and fields (biblical theology\, practical theology\, dogmatics\, church history\, spirituality\, missiology\, ecclesiastical art\, etc.). \nTopics \nSpecial attention will be paid to the following thematic areas: \n1. Controversial figures in church history (e.g. Nestorius\, Dioscorus\, Photios\, Mark of Ephesus\, Theodore of Mopsuestia … ) and reflections on their position in Eastern Catholic theology. \n2. Eastern and Oriental theologians and their relationship to the West (e.g. Gregory of Narek\, Isaac of Nineveh). \n3. Historical apologies for unification (e.g. J. Bekkos\, Cardinal Bessarion\, P. Arcudius\, …). \nFor more information\, you may open the IDEO website\nand this external link

SUMMARY:ATI Summer Seminar in Asian Philosophy and Scholasticism\, 2023
DESCRIPTION:ATI Summer Seminar in Asian Philosophy and Scholasticism\, 2023:\nNeo-Confucians and Scholastics on Practical Reasoning\, Deliberation\, and Choice\nSummer Seminar Date: 13-20 July 2023\nLocation: Pontifical University fo St. Thomas Aquinas (Rome\, Italy)\nCo-leaders: Fr. James Dominic Rooney\, OP (HKBU) & Zemian Zheng (CUHK) \nLanguage: English\nATI Summer School Purpose and Aims: to acquaint scholars of Asian philosophical traditions with scholastic thought\, both in its original sources and in contemporary discussions incorporating appeal to scholastic philosophy\, as well as to acquaint those interested in scholastic thought with Asian philosophical tradition in the same way. \n2023 Theme Description:  \nThis seminar is intended to provide a primer for graduate students on the views of the scholastics and Neo-Confucians concerning practical reasoning\, deliberation\, and choice\, hoping to pave the way for fruitful philosophical dialogue between these important traditions by bringing together students working on projects in Asian or medieval philosophy\, ethics\, and metaphysics. Preference will be given to those students already working on issues associated with the theme of the seminar. \nQuestions of ‘free will’ have concerned metaphysicians in the West for centuries. While Confucians have not been concerned with the same questions which primarily concerned Western metaphysicians\, Confucians have analyzed the moral psychology involved in decision-making and choice\, being deeply concerned with the question why individuals act wrongly. \nThis seminar will focus on those shared background matters associated with practical reasoning\, deliberation\, and choice where Western medieval scholastic philosophy and Neo-Confucian Song-Ming era philosophy can offer distinct perspectives on similar issues. \nFormat / General Scheme: \n\nThere will be two or three sessions each day for eight days\, each day alternating between instructors. Each instructor will open with a lecture\, and then we will turn to a seminar-style discussion of the texts and issues at hand. In the final sessions\, we will discuss how the material can be applied to each student’s particular area of interest.\nThe seminar will take place at the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas in Rome. Travel stipends are available on a need basis. All accepted participants will be provided with accommodations and meals.\n\nApplications are now open! Click here to apply. SUMMARY:Fifth Annual Thomistic Philosophy and Natural Science Symposium
DESCRIPTION:Fifth Annual Thomistic Philosophy and Natural Science Symposium: Uncertainty\, Confidence\, and Truth in the Sciences\n\nJuly 12-16\, 2023 | Dominican House of Studies\, Washington\, DC\nAre there questions that science can answer with certainty? Practicing scientists have developed technical tools for quantifying the confidence they have in their results\, as well as implicit habits for distinguishing “established” science from developments still under debate. These developments give scientists confidence in their work\, but it has proven difficult to consistently communicate the subtleties of their confidence to non-experts. In addition\, as scientists often focus on cutting-edge and disputed topics\, they are less reflective about the confidence and certainty they have in more foundational scientific claims\, for instance: the existence of electrons\, DNA\, or cells. Philosophers of science have engaged in a wide-ranging debate on the nature of scientific claims and whether they can attain real certainty and truth\, but this conversation is often foreign to practicing scientists. \nThis conference investigates the issues of uncertainty\, confidence\, and truth in various scientific disciplines and in the philosophy of science. In particular\, we will investigate whether classical Aristotelian and Thomistic notions such as demonstration and necessity\, as applied to the natural world\, can contribute to the contemporary conversation about truth and certainty in the sciences. \nFeaturing: \nDr. Daniel DeHaan (Oxford University) \nProf. Brian Carl (University of St. Thomas\, Houston) \nFr. Ambrose Little\, O.P. (Dominican House of Studies) \nDr. Connemara Doran (NAS-NRC) \nDr. Steve Mrenna (Fermilab) \nProf. Serena Kim (University of Arizona) \nProf. Lori Watson (Earlham College) \nProf. Dan Kuelber (Franciscan University of Steubenville) \nFr. Gregory Pine\, O.P. (Dominican House of Studies) \nFr. Thomas Davenport\, O.P. (Angelicum) \nCost\, Location\, and Accommodation: \nAll registration costs\, food\, lodging and activities are covered by the Thomistic Institute. \nThis year’s symposium will once again be held in Washington\, D.C.
