DESCRIPTION:A Non-Christian Europe – Is It Possible?\nProfessor Joseph Weiler – New York University School of Law\n19 October 2022 4:30 PM\, Angelicum\, Aula 11\nLanguage: English \nOn Wednesday\, October 19\, 2022\, we invite you to the first lecture of the 2022-23 “JP2 Lectures” series\, organized by the St. John Paul II Institute of Culture at the Angelicum\, which will be given by Professor Joseph Weiler (New York University School of Law). The lecture titled “A Non-Christian Europe – Is It Possible?” will begin at 4.30 PM (CET) in Aula 11 at the Angelicum (address: Largo Angelicum\, 1\, 00184 Roma). \nThere is only one meaningful sense in which Europe could be truly Christian: If a majority of its citizens and residents were faithful\, practicing Christians. If one is to accept this as the determinant criterion\, as Benedict XVI (who is to John Paul II what Joshua was to Moses) has said more than once\, faithful\, practicing Christians have become a minority in Europe. In this sense\, a Non-Christian Europe is not merely possible\, it is a reality.  \nThis said\, it is quite another thing if Europe is to become\, and there are alarming signs in this respect\, Anti-Christian – Christophobic. Put differently\, if Europe is to turn its back on the fundamental\, indispensable centrality of the Christian tradition and ethic to Europe’s cultural and moral identity and if secularism is to become the new ‘Confessional State’.  \nThe most pressing issue is what role and strategy Christians should play and adopt in the face of this emerging reality. It is to this issue that the comments in my lecture will be addressed. \nJ.H.H. Weiler is University Professor at NYU Law School and Senior Fellow at the Center for European Studies at Harvard. He served previously as President of the European University Institute\, Florence. Prof. Weiler is Co-Editor-in-Chief of the European Journal of International Law (EJIL) and the International Journal of Constitutional Law (ICON). He is the recipient of a doctorate honoris causa from the Catholic University of America. One of his notable books is Un’Europa Cristiana: Un saggio esplorativo which has been translated into eight languages. \nProfessor Joseph H.H. Weiler is the winner of the Ratzinger Prize 2022\, the prestigious award that is given to scholars who stand out for their scientific research in the theological field. \nPlease watch their YouTube Link. \n

DESCRIPTION:Angelicum Thomistic Institute – Science & Religion Online Series\nBeyond Human: Transhumanism\, Christianity\, and the Challenge of the Future\nRon Cole-Turner\nPittsburgh Theological Seminary\n12 October 2022\n7:00 PM (Rome) / 6:00 PM (London) / 1:00 PM (New York)\nLanguage: English \nHuman enhancement through technology is becoming commonplace\, with many turning to biomedical advances not just to treat diseases but to enhance their athletic abilities\, good looks\, cognitive abilities\, or long lifespan. But can technology really improve or enhance humanity? Transhumanists believe it can\, and their arguments present a powerful challenge to traditional or static modes of thought about human nature. Transhumanism raises new questions for humanity as a species. Will future human beings become “trans-humans” or “post-humans\,” even to the point of becoming a different species? How will individual human beings find their way in a culture of never-ending possibilities for personal reinvention? Can Christian theology survive in such a culture\, and will it have anything valuable to offer in response? In this lecture\, the changeable nature of the human and the enigma of human nature in a transhumanist age will be explored from a theological perspective. \nRon Cole-Turner is Professor of Theology (emeritus) at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary in Pittsburgh\, Pennsylvania. He holds a Ph.D. in theology from Princeton Theological Seminary and is an ordained Protestant minister in the United Church of Christ. He is a founding member of the International Society for Science and Religion\, serving on its Executive Committee. Over the past decade he has served as co-chair of the American Academy of Religion Unit on “Human Enhancement and Transhumanism.” Recent books include a study of human evolution and its theological significance\, entitled The End of Adam and Eve: Theology and the Science of Human Origins (2016); and Christian Perspectives on Transhumanism and the Church: Chips in the Brain\, Immortality\, and the World of Tomorrow (2018\, co-edited with Steve Donaldson). Al tratar sobre el amor divino\, santo Tomás enuncia una tesis sorprendente\, pero que es clave no solo para comprender el obrar divino ad extra\, sino también para fundar el obrar divino en el mundo: Dios no ama las cosas porque son buenas\, sino que son buenas porque Dios las ama y por eso «el amor de Dios es el que infunde y crea la bondad en las cosas». En otras palabras\, el obrar divino no sigue la realidad\, sino que la constituye. DESCRIPTION:La religion à la loupe des médias (Religion under the Scrutiny of Media) \nby: Père Albert Hisham  \nJune 4\, 2022 \nACADEMIE DE BAGDAD POUR LES SCIENCES HUMAINE  \nPourquoi une académie des sciences humaines ? \n Préambule \nLe projet de cette académie est une initiative des Pères Dominicains de Bagdad qui ont constaté la nécessité de créer un espace de liberté\, de dialogue et de réflexion dans un pays dévasté par la tyrannie\, la guerre\, la rareté et la pauvreté de l’enseignement dispensé à des jeunes générations que l’on pourrait légitimement considérer aujourd’hui comme sacrifiées et sans avenir. \nSi la présence permanente des Pères Dominicains en Irak remonte au 18ème siècle\, leur implantation à Bagdad ne s’est concrétisée qu’en 1966. Ils y mènent depuis une mission d’éducation très appréciée (enseignement\, publication de livres divers et pour enfants\, commentaires…) et\, bien entendu\, de catéchèse et d’enseignement théologique au sein du « Centre Théologique ». \nMais depuis la chute de Saddam Hussein\, les deux derniers volets confessionnels de leur enseignement ne sont plus assurés de manière ouverte\, le gouvernement n’étant pas structuré pour offrir à la minorité chrétienne une protection qui permette à ses membres de continuer à se considérer comme des citoyens ordinaires de ce pays. \nLa communauté chrétienne se trouve en effet menacée dans son existence même\, économiquement asphyxiée\, socialement marginalisée – pour ne pas dire exclue – et contrainte à la clandestinité dans l’exercice de son culte. \nNombre de ses membres se résignent donc à un exil douloureux\, parfois encouragé par des initiatives étrangères qui\, au nom de généreux principes humanitaires\, contribuent indirectement à l’éradication de cette communauté pourtant très appréciée dans la vie de la cité – même si elle ne peut être ouvertement reconnue – pour ses valeurs et son niveau de qualification. \nDans ces conditions\, les Pères Dominicains ont choisi de s’adapter – plutôt que de renoncer – en orientant leur enseignement sur un projet éducatif laïque\, destiné à participer à la reconstruction de leur pays en s’attachant à celle des esprits\, esprits soumis depuis trente ans à la dictature\, à l’absence d’information et de culture\, et depuis dix ans\, à la guerre\, à la division\, à la haine intercommunautaire et au terrorisme. \nACADEMIE DE BAGDAD Fr \nBAGHDAD ACADEMY FOR HUMAN SCIENCES

DESCRIPTION:Angelicum Thomistic Institute – Science & Religion Online Series\nSearch for Alien Life in the Solar System: the Science and Theological Implications\nJonathan Lunine\nCornell University\n17 May 2022\n7:00 PM CEST (Rome) / 6:00 PM BST (London) / 1:00 PM EDT (New York City)\nLanguage: English \nSpace technologies now make possible the search for life across out solar system\, from Mars to the handful of giant planet moons that have liquid water beneath their icy surfaces. This talk describes how that search is being done. But what are the implications for our Catholic faith should life —even microbial life—be found? The talk briefly addresses this question through the writings of St. Thomas and others. \nJonathan I. Lunine is The David C. Duncan Professor in the Physical Sciences at Cornell University and Chair of the Astronomy Department. His research focuses on astrophysics\, planetary science\, and astrobiology. He serves as Interdisciplinary Scientist on the James Webb Space Telescope project and is a co-investigator on the Juno mission currently in orbit around Jupiter. Lunine is a member of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences and a fellow of the American Geophysical Union and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Lunine obtained a B.S. in physics and astronomy from the University of Rochester (1980)\, an M.S. (1983) and a Ph.D. (1985) in planetary science from the California Institute of Technology. He lives in Ithaca New York\, where he is a member of St. Catherine of Siena parish. In 2016 Lunine helped to found the Society of Catholic Scientists. \nThis is an online lecture. DESCRIPTION:Religion et religiosité à la loupe de la politique (Religion and Religiosity under the Scrutiny of Politics) \nby: Ali Abbas Murad (professor of the University of Baghdad) \nMay 7\, 2022 \nACADEMIE DE BAGDAD POUR LES SCIENCES HUMAINE \nPourquoi une académie des sciences humaines ? \n Préambule \nLe projet de cette académie est une initiative des Pères Dominicains de Bagdad qui ont constaté la nécessité de créer un espace de liberté\, de dialogue et de réflexion dans un pays dévasté par la tyrannie\, la guerre\, la rareté et la pauvreté de l’enseignement dispensé à des jeunes générations que l’on pourrait légitimement considérer aujourd’hui comme sacrifiées et sans avenir. \nSi la présence permanente des Pères Dominicains en Irak remonte au 18ème siècle\, leur implantation à Bagdad ne s’est concrétisée qu’en 1966. Ils y mènent depuis une mission d’éducation très appréciée (enseignement\, publication de livres divers et pour enfants\, commentaires…) et\, bien entendu\, de catéchèse et d’enseignement théologique au sein du « Centre Théologique ». \nMais depuis la chute de Saddam Hussein\, les deux derniers volets confessionnels de leur enseignement ne sont plus assurés de manière ouverte\, le gouvernement n’étant pas structuré pour offrir à la minorité chrétienne une protection qui permette à ses membres de continuer à se considérer comme des citoyens ordinaires de ce pays. \nLa communauté chrétienne se trouve en effet menacée dans son existence même\, économiquement asphyxiée\, socialement marginalisée – pour ne pas dire exclue – et contrainte à la clandestinité dans l’exercice de son culte. \nNombre de ses membres se résignent donc à un exil douloureux\, parfois encouragé par des initiatives étrangères qui\, au nom de généreux principes humanitaires\, contribuent indirectement à l’éradication de cette communauté pourtant très appréciée dans la vie de la cité – même si elle ne peut être ouvertement reconnue – pour ses valeurs et son niveau de qualification. \nDans ces conditions\, les Pères Dominicains ont choisi de s’adapter – plutôt que de renoncer – en orientant leur enseignement sur un projet éducatif laïque\, destiné à participer à la reconstruction de leur pays en s’attachant à celle des esprits\, esprits soumis depuis trente ans à la dictature\, à l’absence d’information et de culture\, et depuis dix ans\, à la guerre\, à la division\, à la haine intercommunautaire et au terrorisme. \nACADEMIE DE BAGDAD Fr \nBAGHDAD ACADEMY FOR HUMAN SCIENCES

Bakom det står upplysningstidens förståelse av kausalitet och dess åtföljande deism. I vår tid växer det fram en ny syn på kausalitet som är inspirerad av Aristoteles och Thomas av Aquino och som gör det lättare att förstå att Gud kan intervenera i världen och vara den yttersta orsaken till allting. I denna föreläsning skildras hur Thomas’ förståelse av kausalitet idag kan öppnar nya möjligheter att förstå Gud som alltings yttersta orsak. \nBecause of the Enlightenment understanding of causality and of its accompanying deistic worldview\, the idea of God being the cause of events in the world has long been regarded as intellectually impossible. In our time a new understanding of causality\, largely inspired by Aristotle and Aquinas\, makes it easier to think of God both as the ultimate cause of everything and also as intervening in the events of the world. \nProfessor Ulf Jonsson\, SJ föddes i Sverige 1960. Efter studier i latin och grekiska vid Uppsala universitet\, inträde i Jesuitordens novisiat i Tyskland 1984. Doktorerade vid Uppsala universitet 1999 på en avhandling om Bernard Lonergans Gudsbevis. Docent i religionsfilosofi vid Uppsala universitet sedan 2010\, professor i religionsfilosofi vid Newmaninstitutet i Uppsala sedan 2012. \nProfessor Ulf Jonsson\, SJ was born in Sweden in 1960. After studying Latin and Greek at Uppsala University\, he entered the Novitiate of the Jesuits in Germany in 1984. His PhD dissertation at Uppsala University in 1999 was on Bernard Lonergan’s proof of God’s existence. This lecture suggests otherwise. The Council did show a positive appreciation of non-Christian religions\, but within the context of both mission and dialogue. This gives us a more balanced picture of the tasks ahead. \nGavin D’Costa is Professor of Catholic Theology at the University of Bristol. Gavin studied at the Universities of Birmingham (under Professor John Hick) and completed his doctorate at Cambridge University. Gavin is author of nine books\, one co-authored book\, and has edited twelve books. His interests are in theology of religions\, and more recently the Catholic theology of Jews and Muslims. His work has been translated into seven languages. His two most recent publications are: Vatican II. Catholic Doctrines on Jews and Muslims\, (Oxford University Press\, 2014) and Catholic Doctrines on the Jewish People after Vatican II (OUP\, 2019). Gavin has also published a book of poetry (Making Nothing Happen) with a group of Christian poets. Gavin is an advisor to the Roman Catholic Bishops in England and Wales on matters related to other religions. He has taught in Rome at the Gregorian\, as Visiting McCarthy Professor. The limiting virtues that are the focus are humility\, reverence\, moderation\, contentment\, neighborliness\, and loyalty. This discussion draws from McPherson’s new book The Virtues of Limits (Oxford University Press\, 2022). \nDavid McPherson is an associate professor of philosophy at Creighton University in Omaha\, Nebraska. He works in the areas of ethics (especially virtue ethics)\, political philosophy\, meaning in life\, and philosophy of religion. He is the author of The Virtues of Limits (Oxford University Press\, 2022) and Virtue and Meaning: A Neo-Aristotelian Perspective (Cambridge University Press\, 2020)\, as well as the editor of Spirituality and the Good Life: Philosophical Approaches (Cambridge University Press\, 2017). He is a recent past president of Philosophers in Jesuit Education. DESCRIPTION:Next Steps in the Jewish-Catholic Dialogue\n4 April 2022 – 17:00\nLocation: Angelicum – Aula Minor\, and live-streamed\nLanguage: English and Italian\n\n\nPlease join us for “Next Steps in the Jewish-Catholic Dialogue\,” a pair of lectures co-sponsored by the Angelicum Thomistic Institute and the Cardinal Bea Center for Judaic Studies (Gregorian). In the last half century\, the dialogue between Jews and Catholics has advanced in many unpredictable ways\, but has still left many open questions to explore. \nThe event is divided into two evenings. The first conference on Monday\, April 4 at the Angelicum will present a Catholic rereading of the latest document drawn up in the rabbinical field on the relationship between Jews and Christians followed by a Jewish response. A kosher reception will follow in the Sala delle Collone. Please register here to attend in person or via livestream.
