SUMMARY:Modeling\, Idealization\, and Truth: A Dialogue between Contemporary Philosophy of Science and the Aristotelian Tradition
DESCRIPTION:Modeling\, Idealization\, and Truth: A Dialogue between Contemporary Philosophy of Science and the Aristotelian Tradition\n24-25 February 2023\nAula Minor\, Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas (Angelicum)\, Rome\nLanguage: English\nTheme of the Conference: Philosophy of Science & Aristotelian Tradition \nA central theme within the philosophy of science is the importance of idealization\, metaphor and modeling for both how we know\, and what we know\, through the natural sciences. This improved understanding of how the sciences work has led (at least within the philosophy of science community) to the realization that physical theories should not be interpreted literally\, and that the mathematical structure of a theory is not a straightforward guide to the metaphysics of the entities described by that theory. On the other hand\, the philosophical discussion of modeling\, metaphor and idealization — and the relationship of these notions to truth is not new and has a long pedigree within the Aristotelian-Thomistic tradition. This conference brings together philosophers of science and those working within Aristotelian-Thomism to discuss how the resources of this tradition can be brought to bear on contemporary philosophy of science. \nSpeakers Include: \nNicholas Teh (University of Notre Dame)\nJohn O’Callaghan (University of Notre Dame)\nFr Kevin Flannery (Gregorianum)\nJonathan Buttaci (Catholic University of America)\nSantiago Schnell (University of Notre Dame)\nDave O’Connor (University of Notre Dame)\nJames Nguyen (Stockholm University)\nMariusz Tabaczek\, O.P. (Angelicum)\nThomas Davenport\, O.P. (Angelicum) \nPlease click here to Register \nCall for Papers \nRecent doctoral scholars and graduate students are invited to submit proposals (no longer than 300 words) for a short paper addressing topics discussed at the conference\, as well as other issues in the dialogue between science and religion. Please include a short academic biographical note (50-150 words) in the submission that lists any degrees and the institutions where they were obtained\, as well as your current affiliation. All submissions should be emailed TIinfo@pust.it by 1 January 2023 in order to be considered. \nPUST-Angelicum Thomistic Institute Website link: https://angelicum.it/thomistic-institute/event/philosophy-of-science-and-aristotle/

SUMMARY:The Ethics of Reproductive Technologies
DESCRIPTION:Johns Hopkins Medical University\nThe Johns Hopkins Medical University presents a lecture by Prof. Matthew Dugandzic of St. Mary’s Seminary and University titled “The Ethics of Reproductive Technologies.” \nWednesday\, February 22 \n12:00 PM – 1:30 PM \nTurner Auditorium \nAbout the speaker \nMatthew Dugandzic joined the theology faculty at St. Mary’s Seminary and University in 2019 after completing a Ph.D. in moral theology at The Catholic University of America in Washington\, DC. His dissertation\, “A Thomistic Account of the Habituation of the Passions\,” explored the ways in which people can develop virtuous affective inclinations. \nDr. Dugandzic’s scholarship focuses on medieval thought\, especially Thomas Aquinas’ anthropology\, psychology\, and ethics. His work on Christ’s passions recently appeared in the European Journal for the Study of Thomas Aquinas and his other writings on the passions and on bioethics have appeared in New Blackfriars and National Catholic Bioethics Quarterly. His current research focuses on the sources that Aquinas used in developing his understanding of virtue and on recovering ancient and medieval wisdom regarding economics in order to apply this wisdom to contemporary financial problems (like student loan debt). \nDr. Dugandzic has taught courses in fundamental moral theology\, bioethics\, theological anthropology\, and Catholic social teaching. In addition to his work in the academy\, Dr. Dugandzic has also brought his theological expertise to the aid of the Church\, having taught theology to RCIA groups\, catechists\, and candidates for the permanent diaconate. \nIn addition to his doctorate\, Dr. Dugandzic holds a BSc in biology from Concordia University in Montréal\, Québec and an MA in religious studies from St. Joseph’s Seminary in Yonkers\, New York. He and his wife\, Audra\, live in Baltimore\, MD. In his spare time\, he likes to play hockey\, which he enjoys almost as much as reading theology. \nThis lecture is free and open to the public. \nThomistic Institute Conference link

SUMMARY:Msgr. Michael Nazir-Ali // Course “The emergence of the notion of person in the West\, human dignity\, equality and liberty in Christian and secular thought”
DESCRIPTION:ST. JOHN PAUL II INSTITUTE OF CULTURE\nMsgr. Michael Nazir-Ali // Course “The emergence of the notion of person in the West\, human dignity\, equality and liberty in Christian and secular thought”\nAlongside the ‘descending theme’ of Christian influence on governance and law in the western world\, I intend also to explore an ‘ascending theme’ which comes to prominence from the time of St Thomas Aquinas and is developed in the Dominican tradition in a variety of ways. This theme is focused on an emphasis on the person as a moral and spiritual agent\, leading to a greater recognition of agency\, conscience\, choice and consent. As is increasingly acknowledged\, such a view is itself rooted in the biblical witness and\, particularly\, in the thought of St Paul. I hope to go on to ask about its relevance for the debate about ‘natural rights’ in the early modern period and its relation to Enlightenment thought\, both moderate and radical. I shall then consider whether a proper view of fundamental freedoms is best safeguarded by relying on reason alone\, as argued for by some Enlightenment and modern thinkers or whether cumulative tradition is a better guide. There will\, of course\, also be a consideration of personhood in relation to moral debates today about embryology\, abortion\, assisted suicide\, PVS and human relationships. \nThe schedule for the course is:\nTuesday\, 21 February 2023\, 16.30-18.15 (Aula 10)\nWednesday\, 22 February 2023\, 10.30-12.15 (Aula 15)\nFriday\, 24 February 2023\, 14.30-16.15 (Aula 10)\nMonday\, 27 February 2023\, 8.30-10.15 (Aula 15)\nWednesday\, 1 March 2023\, 10.30-12.15 (Aula 15)\nThursday\, 2 March 2023\, 10.30-12.15 (Aula 15) \nMsgr. Michael James Nazir-Ali is a former Anglican bishop who served as the 106th Bishop of Rochester from 1994 to 2009 and\, before that\, as Bishop of Raiwind in Pakistan. He holds both British and Pakistani citizenship and has both a Christian and Muslim family background. From 1999 he was a member of the House of Lords where he was active in a number of areas of national and international concern. He is currently President of the Oxford Centre for Training\, Research\, Advocacy and Dialogue (OXTRAD).\nIn 2021\, he was received into the Catholic Church. \nIf you wish to participate in the course please contact us at: jp2studies@pust.it \nSt. John Paul II Institute of Culture link \n

SUMMARY:The Christian and the Transhumanist Desire for Transcendence: A Critical Evaluation
DESCRIPTION:Angelicum Thomistic Institute – Science & Religion Online Series\nThe Christian and the Transhumanist Desire for Transcendence: A Critical Evaluation\nMariusz Tabaczek\, OP\nPontifical University of St Thomas Aquinas\n8 February 2022\n7:00  PM (Rome) / 6:00 PM (London) / 1:00 PM (New York)\nLanguage: English \nThe utopian vision and messianic instinct of transhumanist and posthumanist movement reflect a true longing in the human soul. Yet\, the Christian and the secular desire for the transcendent differ considerably. Speaking from the perspective of the Aristotelian-Thomistic tradition of philosophy and theology\, I will compare and critically analyze (1) the object\, (2) the subject\, (3) the way of the fulfillment\, as well as (4) the metaphysical presuppositions that motivate both approaches. Critical about the project of trans- and posthumanism\, I will argue that Christians do not have to radically oppose all changes introduced to human nature that go beyond medical and psychological therapy. \nMariusz Tabaczek\, O.P.\, is a Polish Dominican and theologian. He holds Ph.D. in philosophical theology from the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley\, CA and Church Licentiate from the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan\, Poland. After his studies at the GTU and a fellowship at the Notre Dame Institute for Advanced Studies he returned to Poland. For three years he worked as a researcher at the Thomistic Institute in Warsaw (Poland)\, a lecturer at the Pontifical Faculty of Theology in Warsaw and the Dominican School of Philosophy and Theology in Krakow\, and a director of Studium Dominicanum in Warsaw. He then moved to Rome where he became a professor of theology at the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas. He is also a researcher at the Thomistic Institute at the same University. \nRegistration will open in December 2022.\nPUST-Angelicum Thomistic Institute Website link: https://angelicum.it/thomistic-institute/event/christian-and-transhumanist-transcendence/

Will Conquer\, MEP:  “Buddhism and Catholicism: Opportunities for Convergence”\nProf. Soon Hock Lim:  “Creative Co-Existence in a Religious Pluralistic Society”\nKarl Liu:  “Thomas Aquinas and Chinese Thought” \nThe Catholic Church speaks about Aquinas as a common doctor of theological and philosophical research. But what could that mean today in the context of the Church’s life in Asia with its diverse cultures and religious as well as secular philosophical traditions? What does it mean to speak realistically about Aquinas for Asia? \nThis day-long conference at the Angelicum will explore Aquinas’s thought in conversation with classical Hindu traditions\, principles of Buddhist doctrine\, and elements from classical and contemporary Chinese and Southeast Asian political thought. The aim is to explore seeds of thinking for the evangelization and profound Catholic engagement of contemporary Asian cultures. \nRegistration: https://forms.gle/sdHE2NedGdU3iLmJ9\nLunch included for those who register. \nFor more information\, you may open the PUST website link: https://angelicum.it/event/aquinas-for-asia-2023/?fbclid=IwAR0k4dvez6SM8KTIHZWa_DfTrjILZ95qvd4KqKgvesvVPaErSq5TZlCoTSQ

SUMMARY:The Religion of Technology: Transhumanism and the Myth of Progress
DESCRIPTION:Angelicum Thomistic Institute – Science & Religion Online Series\nThe Religion of Technology: Transhumanism and the Myth of Progress\nMichael Burdett\nUniversity of Nottingham\nIan Ramsey Centre for Science and Religion\, University of Oxford\n14 December 2022\n7:00  PM (Rome) / 6:00 PM (London) / 1:00 PM (New York)\nLanguage: English \nIn this presentation I chart a succinct intellectual history of the myth of progress and how it has been embedded\, and is still embedded\, in the claims of science and technology. Furthermore\, I aim to show how transhumanism depends upon and extends this rampant and robust myth and that its enthusiasts subsequently derive religious value from it. First\, I begin with the claims of this myth of progress and try to arrive at some characterizing features of it. Next I turn to the origins of this myth of progress and how it became entwined with the claims of technoscience leading to its prominence in the 19th century. I then turn to the first part of the 20th century when this myth is seriously questioned and the entire edifice of the Modern project begins to crumble at its base. From here I focus on more recent technoscientific utopias that culminate in transhumanism and show a propensity in taking up this myth once again. Finally\, I give several comments on the religious dimensions of transhumanism and assert that the myth of progress is one of its core doctrines. \nDr Michael Burdett is Assistant Professor of Christian Theology at the University of Nottingham and an associate of the Ian Ramsey Centre for Science and Religion\, University of Oxford. Before becoming an academic and completing his DPhil at the University of Oxford\, Michael worked in the aerospace and robotics industries for several years working with a firm that had contracts with NASA and JPL. He holds degrees in engineering\, physics\, and theology and has been given academic and professional awards in each field. His academic interests lie at the intersection of science and technology\, theology and philosophy. He has published and presented internationally on continental philosophy\, evolution\, the technological society and Christian theology. He is a series editor for the Routledge Science and Religion series  (with Mark Harris) and his major works include Technology and the Rise of Transhumanism: Beyond Genetic Engineering (Grove\, 2014)\, Eschatology and the Technological Future (Routledge\, 2015) and Finding Ourselves After Darwin: Conversations about the Image of God\, Original Sin\, and the Problem of Evil (Baker Academic\, 2018). \nHe has lead several funded science and religion projects including “Co-creating Ourselves?: Deification and Creaturehood in an Age of Biotechnological Enhancement” (JTF)\, “Bridging the Two Cultures of Science and Humanities” (TRT and Blankemeyer) and “Christian Flourishing in a Technological World” (Issachar). He is currently leading a grant entitled “Biocultural Evolution and Theological Anthropology” (JTF) and working on his next book tentatively titled Death and Glory: Humanism\, Transhumanism and Christianity. \nRegistration will open in autumn 2022.

SUMMARY:Nature and Grace: A Thomistic Introduction
DESCRIPTION:Nature and Grace: A Thomistic Introduction\nThomas Joseph White\, OP\nSimon Francis Gaine\, OP\n29 October 2022\nColégio de São Tomás – Quinta das Conchas\nLanguage: English \nHow can one understand philosophically what nature is\, and what human nature is specifically? How should one understand the theological notion of grace and how do grace and nature relate to another? Thomas Aquinas offers clear analysis of both these questions and this seminar will seek to examine his answers. Perhaps unsurprisingly\, St Thomas’ notions of human nature\, human longing for happiness and truth\, and the promise of grace and its role in our lives is of great relevance in our contemporary epoch. \nJoin us in Lisbon for this conference on nature and grace according to St Thomas Aquinas\, given by the Rector Magnificus Fr Thomas Joseph White\, OP\, and the Director of the Angelicum Thomistic Institute Fr Simon Francis Gaine\, OP. \nCoffee breaks and a snack lunch will be available for registered participants. \nClick HERE to register.\nLodging aid can be provided for a limited number of attendees chosen through a selection process. In case you are traveling from outside of Lisbon and is interested in receiving this aid\, please fill the corresponding questions on the registration form linked above. \nThis conference will not be live-streamed and it is not possible to attend it online.\n\nPUST-Angelicum website link \n\n\n\n\n ADD TO CALENDAR
